At the first annual Creating Minds Symposium, noted education scholar Dr. Howard Gardner and 2008 National Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen will discuss creativity and the future of education. Teachers, school administrators, and anyone interested in understanding the critical role that creativity plays in our children’s lives and in our schools is invited to attend.

This event is being held on a statewide teacher inservice day to encourage and allow teachers from Oregon and Washington a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Gardner speak about his work.
Time: 9:00 a.m. to noon; arrive early for coffee and pastries at 8:30 a.m.
Location: First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Avenue, Portland

Speaker Biographies
Howard Gardner is the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Among numerous honors, Gardner is the recipient of a MacArthur Prize Fellowship (often called the “genius grant”). Gardner is best known for his theory of multiple intelligences, a critique of the notion that there exists but a single human intelligence that can be adequately assessed by standard psychometric instruments. His most recent book is Five Minds for the Future.
Michael Geisen is the 2008 National Teacher of the Year and a seventh-grade science teacher at Crook County Middle School in Prineville, Oregon. He has become a spokesperson for education, teaching educators, policy-makers, and business people around the world about high-quality teaching and learning.
This event is made possibly by MetroArts Inc., Young Audiences of Oregon, and the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling Center for Community Engagement, in collaboration with the OHSU Brain Institute.
