What does a Victim’s Lawyer do for the Victim in the Romanian Criminal Justice System?

There is no requirement that a victim be represented by an attorney in a case in Romania.  In fact, once a victim has filed the formal complaint and the prosecution has substantial evidence connecting the victim to the offender(s), that victim is a part of the criminal trial.  Legal representation is useful, however, especially when victims cannot appear in trial, as the case is for victims from abroad, because the attorney can follow the case closely, make statements to the prosecutor and the court on behalf of the victim, and ensure that any claims for restitution are properly made. Furthermore, the attorney may oppose claims from the defendants to dismiss certain evidence connecting the victim to the defendant as well as make oppositions to requests from the defendants to release certain seized assets during trial.
