“I became one of two legal advisors to the president of the Iran-United States tribunal. As legal advisor, one of my most important duties was to help draft the tribunal’s decisions. These are very important decisions, which indeed may have an impact on the relations between the two countries.”

Class of ’01, LLM; ’04, JD

Alejandro Tosi is an Argentinian lawyer who came to Lewis & Clark to pursue an LLM in environmental law. Initially, he had no plans to practice international law.

“In Argentina I practiced corporate law, with some emphasis in environmental law. My original idea was to move back after finishing the program and practice environmental law there. Once in the United States, however, I changed my mind and I decided to practice environmental law in the United States.”

After obtaining his LLM in 2001, he stayed on at Lewis & Clark to pursue a JD, which he earned in 2004. He practiced for four years at Schwabe, Williamson &Wyatt in Portland, where he met another Law School graduate who eventually moved to Europe to work for the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. Tosi’s connection led him to a position with that court.

He became one of two legal advisors to the president of the tribunal. As legal advisor, one of his most important duties was to help draft the tribunal’s decisions. These are very important decisions, which indeed may have an impact on the relations between the two countries. I found it exciting to work in a place that has been the only place where the United States and Iran have had direct relations for most of the last 28 years. After two years in The Hague, he became a Legal Advisor for the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
