1981

Arts & Sciences Reunion June 23-26, 2011

Richard Melnick JD was appointed to Clark County Superior Court by Washington Governor Chris Gregoire. He was previously a judge in Clark County’s District Court.

1982

Jay Formick BS earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Oregon Health & Science University in June 2010.

1983

Lawrence Hartig JD is lieutenant governor of Alaska, now second in line to the governor’s office. Prior to his appointment as commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation by Governor Sarah Palin in 2007, Hartig was in private practice with the Anchorage law firm Hartig Rhodes Hoge & Lekisch, where he had worked since 1983 on environmental, natural resources, and commercial matters.

Pamela Knowles JD is managing director of the Oregon Zoo Foundation. She raises money to support the zoo’s activities and manages membership activities for 46,000 Friends of the Zoo. Knowles is also a member of the Portland Public Schools Board of Education.

1984

Megan Ballard BA is an associate professor of law at Gonzaga School of Law. She received tenure in May 2007 and is taking a sabbatical during the 2010–11 academic year. Ballard received a Fulbright award to teach and research postconflict property restitution in the Republic of Georgia. A Gonzaga Academic Council grant allows Ballard to conduct similar research in Colombia.

Stephen Doherty JD is senior advisor for the Northwest to U.S. Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar. Doherty, a partner at Smith & Doherty in Montana, has more than 20 years of experience in civil litigation and tribal law. He chaired Montana’s Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Commission from 2005 to 2009, and he previously served 12 years in the Montana State Senate.

Phil Lowery BA directed Mozart’s Don Giovanni for San Francisco’s Parlor Opera in May 2010. Cynthia Scharf BA, as a member of the U.N. Secretary-General’s climate change support team, serves as principal speechwriter on climate issues and advises on strategic communications. Sharf and her husband recently celebrated their 20th anniversary, and their daughter is gearing up for college.

1985

Sheila Gallagher BA joined General Mills in 1987 as a sales representative in the Northwest region. In 2010, she was promoted to vice president of sales, operations, and planning within the company’s Bakeries and Food-service Division.

Amy Beltaine BA graduated in 2010 from Meadville Lombard Theological School, a Unitarian Universalist seminary based in Chicago. She looks forward to pursuing chaplaincy work in Salem.
