M. Carr Ferguson

Carr Ferguson’s interest in the Law School was started in 1989 when he served as a Higgins Distinguished Visitor. Mr. Ferguson is senior counsel in Davis Polk & Wardwell’s Tax Department, involved in the Tax Controversy Practice Group. In addition to tax controversies, his practice includes federal and international taxation of corporations and individuals, principally in the areas of business transactions, including sales, acquisitions, financing, and insolvency arrangements. In addition to his extensive trial experience, he has argued tax appeals in most of the Federal Courts of Appeal and the United States Supreme Court. He graduated from Cornell University in 1952 and in 1954 received is LL.B from Cornell Law School. He earned an LL.M in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1960 and for the next 17 years, was a professor of law at Iowa, Stanford, and New York University, where he was the Charles L. Denison Professor of Law.

Mr. Ferguson received the Honorary Alumnus Award from Lewis & Clark Law School in 1998.  He previously served as Chair of the Board of Visitors and currently serves as a Trustee for Lewis & Clark College.
