Caihua Ouyang

UWC attended: UWC in Costa Rica
Class Year: Class of 2018

UWC is a very unique place. I had the worst and the best day of my life there so my emotions on it are quite complicated. I hate it sometimes. First, there is not a constant comfortable zone. Interacting and understanding plenty of different peoples’ opinions are very impossible. For example, something you see can really freak you out. Second, people naturally split into different cultural groups. It takes a lot of efforts to know others and finally become part of the groups. In fact, some people do no talk to each other at all and most of people feel very lonely. Third, IB is a heavy burden for every single person especially second year. It occupies much of their time and makes it hard for them to have any free time to talk to people. Sometimes I love it. First, UWC does not mainly teach me how to study but be good at as a person. For example, form my world outlook, explore my interests, manage my time, interact with people, live a healthy life and so on. Second, people are amazing. I become friends with people who I may not even meet in my entire life if I do not come to UWC. By now, I have earned two closest friends and many other good friends. I believe they are the most valuable treasure of my life. Third, UWC is very democratic. Students have much power to organize various activities. It is so cool to see groups doing different things and feel free to go and join in them at anytime. I still remember the wildest Hatchet, coolest second year and first year show and awesome tutor group outing.

My university counselor strongly recommended me to consider L&C saying that it is a very collaborative school, beautiful campus and in a very livable city. I think collaboration is a efficient method to gain as much knowledge as I could because I enjoy the learning experience I had with my schoolmates and then my learning outcomes increased a lot. Furthermore there is no doubt that Portland is a awesome city to live and as a basketball lover I desire to watch trailblazers playing basketball in NBA

I think I will major psychology unless I found other things that I am interested in. I took IB Psychology SL for two years and thought it is very helpful to a person’s living. For example, health psychology can help a person to cope with stress, obesity and substance abuse. Social psychology can guide a person to build a harmonious human relationship. Educational psychology can assist teachers, parents and others in educating their students, children and friends.

I love to play sports especially basketball. People think It is a tall-people’s game but I believe short guys are also able to play it very well. To prove that, I have never been afraid of playing with tall player and still planned to continue it in college.

In my free time, I like to watch English movies and video games. It has been a important hobby for me since very young, however I have struggled a lot to give them up since they wasted me much time.

I love Chinese traditional cultures like poetry, handwriting and Kongfu and I even ran a Tai Chi workshop at UWCCR. But I found it conflicts with western cultures like etiquette, education and love. As a result, I am confused about what I am going to follow at UWCCR that is filled by western culture. Time just went by and I realized I have unconsciously changed many of my opinions in two years. I have become more open to western cultures and am able to integrate both of them together. Now I love them both and could choose to follow what I prefer to.

I learned guitar for a couple of months but I play very bad, so I wish to continue it in college.

I also like Physics as I am good at it since middle school. Moreover, I enjoy the metal process much when working on problem sets at school.

I am willing to study anthropology because I am interested in getting to know different cultures and then travel to various countries.

I did not travel much abroad because it has never been in my mind before. In fact, traveling is not popular among Chinese teenagers. However I would like to visit other countries desperately after two year’s studying at UWC in Costa Rica. Many of my schoolmates have been to plenty of beautiful countries and it inspired me to do so. I take it as a challenging adventure and a great opportunity to enrich my life experience. More importantly, I do have much passion on it. It is hard to foresee what benefits I could get but I will just follow my enthusiasm.
