I was born in Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay, and went to a religious school, where things were taught with the purpose of finding only one answer to everything, excluding creativity from the education system and never having a connection between students and teachers. The idea of going to a UWC gave me hope at imagining the opportunity of being in a classroom where there is more than one answer to everything, and it also changed me and inspired me by knowing that people from all over the world are living and building a community together, exploring the different concepts of education inside and outside the classroom.
I went to Pearson College, and the sense of community there was the thing I enjoyed the most and I learned the most from. Besides being in the woods often and having many outdoor adventures, being able to participate and being listened to by my schoolmates, the faculty and staff, and living in a community we built ourselves are some of the most priceless things and memories I have from there. Those two years were the ones that gave me direction and made me aware of what I want at the time of building my future and choosing where I wanted to go next, and that is why I chose to come to Lewis & Clark, in order to continue with my explorations and my journey of growth.
The connection between teachers and students, the open-mindedness and consideration, the awareness that we are all human underneath the tags and identities that we put to ourselves are things that interest me deeply. Therefore, I want to major in Psychology, due to my interest of understanding a human being’s behavior under different circumstances, interactions and different social groups.
Outside the classroom, my hobbies consists of sports, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis, as well as Theatre, and Music”¦LOTS and LOTS of music. Back in high school, they gave us awards especially made for each one of the graduate students; I received one called “The most likely to be in a one-man band.” Although I must admit that I hate to read music sheets, I still managed to learn how to play the guitar, the piano, the drums, the glockenspiel, and the mandolin, my greatest and newest acquisition. I still hope to learn how to play more instruments in the future.
My academic interests go more towards the social sciences and humanities. Everything related to Social Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology, History and Politics catch my interest. That is why, besides majoring in Psychology, I would also like to have a minor in Latin American Studies, because by having a greater and deeper understanding of the political, educational, economic and social system of Latin America I will feel more capable to go back to my country and apply all of my knowledge successfully.
At Lewis and Clark, I hope to challenge myself both academically and personally, by exploring new things and rediscovering myself several times through a new growth and learning process that involves being part of a new community.
