he East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) goals are to introduce U.S. graduate students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research setting, and to help students initiate scientific relationships that will better enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. Selected students participate in research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan. All institutes, except Japan, last approximately 8 weeks from June to August. Japan lasts approximately 10 weeks from June to August.

Since 1952, the National Science Foundations (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program has recognized and supported future leaders in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Each year, NSF awards up to 2,000 fellowships to outstanding students in these fields. Benefits of the fellowship include: three years of financial support over a five-year period. This includes a $32,000 annual stipend, a $12,000 annual cost-of-education allowance, international research and professional development opportunities.

The Fusion Energy Postdoctoral Research Program offers recent doctoral degree recipients the opportunity to conduct research in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) fusion energy research and development programs. Participants acquire experience and training in areas of fusion energy, interact with outstanding scientists and engineers, and have access to advanced equipment and facilities. Appointments are made to designated DOE laboratories, universities, and contractor fusion energy centers.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art annually welcomes a vibrant group of graduate students, museum professionals, and senior scholars to undertake independent study and research related to the Museum’s collections. Fellows become immersed in the life of the Museum through behind-the-scenes tours, weekly gatherings with members of the Museum staff, and tours of the collections and exhibitions. Each spring, we offer a series of fellows’ colloquia, providing an opportunity for the scholars to present short papers on their work in progress to university colleagues, Museum staff, and the academic community.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) administers an array of graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships with the support of its members, corporations, and government agencies nationwide. The fellowships and scholarships help further the education of outstanding graduate and undergraduate students pursuing a career in the atmospheric and related oceanic or hydrologic sciences.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings (Hollings) scholarship program is designed to:increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities;increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy;recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; andrecruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.

The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the tenable schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among tenable schools.

The Hispanic Engineers National Achievement Awards Conference offers scholarships of $500 to $5,000 to Hispanic students of science, technology, engineering, or math-related majors. Several different scholarships are available, including the HENAAC Student Leadership Award, for which one undergraduate and one graduate student will be chosen.

The National Space Club awards a $10,000 scholarship each year, in memory of Dr. Robert H. Goddard, America’s rocket pioneer. The scholarship is presented at the Goddard Memorial Dinner each spring, for the following academic year. The award is given to stimulate the interest of talented students in the opportunity to advance scientific knowledge through space research and exploration.

As a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2013, subject to the availability of funds. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers scholarships to undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who will pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research.

These fellowships provide support for three years of graduate study in mathematics, sciences, or engineering leading to a Ph.D. (not MD). Separate competitions are held for the two types of fellowships. NSF awards 1000 fellowships annually, with additional awards available for women in engineering, computer science, or information science.
