New Media
Projects
New Media has many, many projects and tasks at any one time. Some are extremely short, maybe requiring a couple minutes or less, and others extending to a year or more (not including the projects without an end date). Some tasks are a daily surprise and others planned for many months. And then there’s training too.
As such, our schedule is extremely fluid and difficult to quantify at any one time. Nonetheless, we’ve attempted to do just that below but have kept ourselves to the larger projects. If you’re wondering, we do have some basic rules about how we prioritize projects and what our process is for attending to them.
I need help with a new project.
Project Types
Our larger projects fall into six categories: Design, Applications, Content, Training, Infrastructure and Consulting.
Design
Design projects are oftentimes new websites or completely relaunched websites. They may also become applications, but the visual design, function and user interface needs some fleshing out before building the site can occur. Design projects are finite in length.
Applications
Applications most often fall into the category of web applications or software-as-a-service. Some examples include the search engine, calendar, directory, etc. Application projects are living projects in that they often have no finite end date and are regularly updated or maintained.
Content
Content projects are when we help editors update or maintain their websites, conduct maintenance of the top levels of the site, or (re)develop shared content resources, such as maps, tours, etc. These are often the shortest projects in terms of duration, but also occupy a large segment of our time, since content is expensive.
Training
We prefer to give our editors the power and control of their content whenever possible, and that requires training. We regularly train individuals in one-on-one sessions and groups of people to better use the services and software we manage.
Infrastructure
We manage our own servers and maintain code repositories for all of our owned applications. While we hope this is never on our day-to-day task list, it does require a consistent hand to keep software and servers up-to-date, and make sure that systems are well documented.
Consulting
Consulting projects are where New Media assists in the selection of an external resource and may be involved in some setup or deployment of the new resource. In a few cases, we may then also “own” the resource (as in we are the admins for it). Consulting projects often have a significant end date, but have long-term maintenance needs of we own the resource..
