TH&A file

8.1 The committee met in Olin 301 to review podium equipment.

8.2 The document camera was reviewed and compared with an overhead projector. The committee agreed that in general overhead projectors need not be provided in rooms that have the document cameras. The building will instead have several "roving" overhead projectors that will be kept in storage. It was noted that some faculty make presentations using powerpoint. The current proposal is that 70% of the classrooms will have full technology systems. The remaining 30% will be adaptable to integrate technology at a later date.

8.3 The Technology Group had met previously and recommended that the proposed video monitor and control panel be combined into one unit. CompView demonstrated a 12" LCD monitor which could combine both functions. The committee agreed that the size was adequate.

8.4 The podium design was discussed. The podium will be 2'-10" wide, 2'-5" deep and 42" high. It will have a raised edge on the audience side to manage power and data outlets and a pivoting horizontal surface. The size is determined by the document camera which will be in a pull-out drawer. There was some concern about the size. TH&A were asked to provide a sloped surface for papers. This could be combined with an inset angled monitor. TH&A will modify proposed design and attach drawing to these minutes.

8.5 A simple mock up of the podium will be brought to the next meeting. TH&A recommend that a complete mock-up including working technology be constructed for review prior to manufacture of the final podia.

8.6 Each podium will have a microphone. Each room will have voice reinforcement capability. Large classrooms will have assisted listening systems as required by code.

8.7 Each podium will have a task light. There will also be a ceiling mounted can light over the podium position which is close to the AV cabinet. This light is to illuminate the speaker when the room is dark. TH&A will review the possibility that this light is dimmable.

8.8 The AV cabinet design was reviewed. The committee agreed that no general storage is needed in the AV cabinet. The cabinet has been simplified to show 2 doors. One door is locked and housed controlling equipment. The second door is not locked. It covers the VHS and DVD players and a locking drawer for the laptop computer.

8.9 There will be a phone mounted on the side of each AV cabinet.

8.10 The projector screen system for each typical classroom was reviewed. TH&A presented drawings showing the screen location and size, with the resulting sight lines and viewing positions. The committee approved the screen locations for the small and medium classrooms. It was decided to have one screen in each of the large classrooms. Two screens cause some viewing angle cut-off for certain seat positions and the committee did not consider two screens to be essential for instruction. It was noted that the large classroom on the first floor will have 4 seats that will be closer to the screen than the recommended 1:2 screen height to viewing distance ratio.

8.11 The slide projector shelf has been shown at 4’-6" based on recommendations by the Technology Group. TH&A presented sectional drawings through each typical room showing projection angles in relation to seated viewers. In each case this was acceptable.

8.12 The large classroom on the first floor was reviewed. Based on previous recommendations the anterooms have been removed. The corridor doors have been inset to reduce outswing into the corridors. The steps are 7" high and 4’-6" deep. The seating will be loose seating, with fixed tables.

8.13 The large classroom on the second floor was reviewed. The room has been reconfigured to show two store rooms. One opens into the classroom and one opens into the corridor. The size was discussed and it was agreed that they should remain as shown. Marker boards have been added to the north and south walls, allowing multiple teaching walls in this room.

8.14 The lighting scheme for a typical classroom was discussed. Direct/Indirect linear fluorescent fixtures are the general light source. Recessed can lights will be provided where the video projector prevents the use of pendant lights. The teaching wall will be lit with wall washers. There is concern that these wall washers are carefully placed and switched so that the lighting of the marker boards does not compromise the projection screen. A single can light will be placed over the podium location adjacent to the AV cabinet. TH&A will review the possibility that this light be dimmable. A bank of switches located on the side of the AV cabinet will control the lighting. A single switch by the entrance to the classroom will be able to switch the room lights on or off, based on the last configuration set at the AV cabinet. Lighting will be zoned.

7.1 The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 16th at 3:30.
