Add Beds to Forest and Copeland Residence Halls

As we worked to update the Residence Hall development plan, we also reviewed how space was being used in existing residence halls, in particular the Copeland and Forest complexes. We looked at these halls closely because they were built with integrated classrooms. Having recently completed JR Howard Hall, most of these classrooms were unused. In addition, a long standing policy of the college master plan is to reduce or eliminate non-residential uses in residence halls.

Our preliminary investigation revealed 11 of these classrooms plus a variety of other support spaces whose utilization might be improved with careful re-design. The planning committee determined that we should strive to maximize use of these spaces by converting them to residential sleeping rooms and/or apartment style suites. This action would be both quicker and potentially less expensive than building a comparable number of new beds.

The architect’s charge, meeting notes and drawings document this planning effort.
