Residence Hall Expansion and Renewal
Completed August 2002
These two-and three-story houses are planned to accommodate approximately 56 junior and senior class students in combinations of two and four-bedroom suites. Each suite may include a bathroom (or two), a moderate kitchen and common social space. Houses will have common social spaces. The Lewis & Clark houses will enrich the educational experiences of all Lewis & Clark students by encouraging upper division students to live on campus. Located on the southern campus on sloping ground, the houses fit naturally into the setting and reflect the scale and materials of the manor house. Restoring the natural features and vegetation of this prominent hillside location and enhancing the pedestrian connections to the academic facilities to the north, is an additional goal of this program.
In addition to new construction, this comprehensive residence hall improvement program will include modifications to many existing residence halls. Specific changes address both immediate and long- term concerns voiced by residents. For example, some multi-occupant rooms will be converted to single rooms as new facilities come on line. Common use areas such as group kitchenettes and lounges will also be improved to better serve resident's needs. These improvements will be coordinated with new construction to help bring improvements to our housing stock and residence hall programs in a comprehensive way.
Scheduled for phased construction and occupancy from 2001/2 through 2020, this development will complete the south campus and expand on-campus residences from approximately 1000 residences to approximately 1400. Existing structures and roads will be razed as the phases are implemented and utility infrastructure will be added incrementally. The first phase consists of three houses of 56 beds each and approximately 7,000 square feet of "mixed use retail" designed to serve residences' needs for social, recreational and activity spaces. The projected budget for first phase is approximately $21,000,000.
Construction started May of 2001
Scheduled completion August of 2002
