Landscape Improvement

Phase II, $994,000

Phase II, the final phase, of this multi-year landscape project encompasses an area bounded by the Glade on the north edge, Templeton Student Center to the South, the formal Frank Manor Estate Gardens to the east, and extending to Gate 4 and Palatine Hill Road to the west.

This project returns the core area of the Campus to one which is consistent with an established estate garden, while simultaneously providing improved pathways for pedestrians and spaces conducive to student, faculty, and community interaction.

Highlights of Phase II include a paver road with cobble accents between Frank Manor House and Palatine Hill Road, a stone stairway leading down the slope which is east of the Gatehouse, a stone stairway north of Templeton Student Center, a compacted gravel walkway encircling the east lawn of Frank Manor House, a modification of vegetation at the ceremonial entry leading to the Frank Manor House which showcases the historic Gatehouse and associated basalt walls, a carefully designed system of paver walks with cobblestone accents to enhance pedestrian travel and visually blend with an essence of the original estate ways, improved drainage to permit enjoyment of the lawn areas for extended times during the year, planting of shrubbery and trees which enhances appearance, installation of benches for quiet interactions and viewing the beautiful surroundings, an irrigation system which conserves water as well as encourages healthy lawns, renovation of three decorative fountains and associated pools within the original estate gardens which has returned the fountains to full operation while simultaneously reestablishing use of the College’s well water system for irrigation of Phase I and Phase II landscape, a lighting system which uses less energy and provides more illumination than was previously available, and removal of vehicular parking and traffic to create a more “pedestrian friendly” environment.

The beautiful and functional landscape design for Central Campus Landscape Improvements, Phase I and Phase II has been formally recognized. In October 2000, Walker-Macy received the Honor Award from the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for Core Campus Redevelopment at Lewis & Clark College.

Walker-Macy’s significant design concept was crafted by Cascadian Landscapers, Inc. as the general contractor and Louis Guinett Masonry, Inc. as the stonemason. Construction began May 1, 2000. Substantial completion of all “hardscape work” was reached on August 25th, 2000. Substantial completion for the entire project was attained on October 7th, 2000, one week ahead of schedule. Expected cost at completion is $993,000.
