Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), and Disability Insurance
We provide Basic Life and AD&D insurance at no cost to you if you are an eligible employee. You may also apply for Supplemental Life insurance for yourself and your families at a competitive group rates, in addition to any employer-paid Basic Life insurance already in force. This is because we recognize that our employees have different financial needs.
Your disability insurance is designed to pay a monthly benefit in the event you cannot work for an extended period of time because of a covered illness or injury. There is no cost for eligible employees for both the Basic Long Term Disability (LTD) and the Short Term Disability (STD) insurance. The Basic LTD becomes payable at the end of the 180 day benefit waiting period, with a voluntary LTD Buy-Up option for non-exempt employees that reduces the waiting period in half to 90 days. For exempt employees, the employer-paid STD benefits become payable after a 22 workday waiting period, during which time vacation and sick pay may be used. We provide these benefits to help you to meet your financial commitments in a time of need by replacing a portion of your income.
Long Term Care
Group Long Term Care is available for all eligible faculty and staff, their spouse, same sex domestic partner, parents, grandparents, parents-in-law and grandparents-in-law. Employees, their spouse and/or same sex domestic partner will have their premiums deducted through payroll deduction. Parents, grandparents, and in-laws will be direct billed by Genworth, the plan administrator. Eligible, actively-at-work employees, their spouses, same sex domestic partners, parents, grandparents and in-laws may apply at any time but must complete questionnaires and may be required to show evidence of good health. New Hires who apply within 31 days of their hire date are guaranteed acceptance.
Long Term Care provides a variety of services for people who are unable to care for themselves, and, is often referred to as custodial care. Medicare and private health insurance plans or disability coverage typically do not provide coverage for long term care needs. Group Long Term Care coverage is designed specifically to cover the costs associated with extended long term care.
