Lewis and Clark College Relocation Allowance Guidelines for New Faculty and Staff Members

Lewis and Clark College may provide financial support for the relocation of newly hired faculty and staff. A relocation allowance may be offered to offset some of the direct expenses associated with moving to the Portland area and is available to cover items such as the following:

  • Professional moving company services to move household goods
  • Moving van or trailer rental to move household goods
  • Shipping costs for household goods
  • Transportation and lodging while relocating. This includes vehicle mileage (at a rate determined by the College), if driving a personal vehicle to relocate.

 The relocation allowance will be treated as income to the employee and will be reported on their form W-2. Employees who receive a relocation allowance may be able to deduct approved expenses on their tax returns. We recommend that new employees speak to a tax consultant regarding the deductibility of these expenses.

Special circumstances may provide the rationale for a relocation allowance that exceeds these guidelines. In such cases, the additional amount must be recommended by the supervisor and approved by the President, Provost, or VP for Business and Finance at the College.
