NSO Schedule

Note:  Student volunteers helping with International Student/TCK new student orientation should meet for training on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the office of International Students & Scholars in Templeton Center.

 

Monday, August 28, 2017 (Arrival Day)

9 a.m. — 5 p.m.
New students arrive throughout the day. Transportation provided by International Students and Scholars (ISS), Blue Star Charters & Tours, and White Van Shuttle (TEL 503-774-9755 or online at:  http://www.whitevanshuttle. com/). L&C Drivers: Brian White/ISS and Bridget Flaherty/ISS; L&C Student Greeters: Shimpei Goto and Jasmine Bruinooge. We will meet Delta Airlines flight #68 from Tokyo at 10:16 a.m. and other flights throughout the day.  Emergency TEL: 503-768-7305 (Office of International Students & Scholars).

Students arriving on campus may move into their rooms anytime after 9:00AM.

Students report to International Students and Scholars (ISS) to pick up packets, room keys, access cards, and linen (if needed).

Students settle into their rooms.  The following student volunteers will be on hand to help new students move into their rooms:  Badral Batbold, Mongolia; Vinaya Bharam, India;  Sergely Steephen Bokouende, Congo; Oluwanifemi Esther Bolatimi, Nigeria;  Christopher Breen, USA;  Jady Brown, Aruba; Jasmine Bruinooge, Japan/USA;  Shane Carreira, Brazil/USA; Minho Choi, South Korea; Shimpei Goto, Japan; Jaweal Hakoum, Syria/USA; Yexing Li, China;  Anna Lyubinina, Ukraine/USA; Anna N Semi, Congo/Hungary; ISS staff members Paola Dennis and Iona Musgnung will also assist.

Students can visit International Students and Scholars (ISS) to call home and inform parents of safe arrival.

Snacks will be available at International Students and Scholars (ISS) office.

Students take ID card pictures after settling in.  Jaweal Hakoum, Minho Choi, and Esther Bolatimi can accompany students to Campus Safety.

11:45 a.m. — 1:00 p.m.  (Note:  Volunteers should stagger lunch times)
Lunch  for students who have arrived.  Jady Brown, Anna Lyubinina, and Vinaya Bharam will be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 11:45 a.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.


1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks:

  • Take a picture for the ISS electronic screen. Steephen Bokouende and Yexing Li will assist with pictures.
  • Waive the L&C health insurance plan, if you have private insurance.  Christopher Breen will assist.  Insurance waiver system can be found at:
  • Take a logistical tour of Templeton.  Checkout your mailbox, find the ATM, stop by the SAAB Tutoring Office, etc.  Tours at:  1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 p.m. Shane Carreira and Anna N Semi will alternate leading the tours.
  • Get ID card at Campus Safety.

1:15 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students who have not completed forms or vaccinations for the Student Health Center, please check in at the International Student and Scholars Office.  International Students and Scholars.

3:30p.m.
Open a bank account.  Representatives of US Bank will be on campus to help international students set up a bank account.  Please bring your passport and your visa with you. Volunteers:  Vinaya Bharam and Badral Batbold will direct students to this session and help with copying.  Council Chamber in Templeton Center.

Visit the Lewis & Clark Bookstore.  If you need snack food, toiletries or want to start browsing for textbooks, learn where the bookstore is and make your purchases this afternoon.  Open until 5:00 p.m.

5:00 p.m.
Dinner
  Anna N Semi, Christopher Breen, and  Jasmine Bruinooge  will meet at the door of Fields Dining Room at 5:00 p.m. to orient students to the dining room.  Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

5:45 p.m.
Tour of Campus led by Steephen Bokouende, Jaweal Hakoum, and Yexing Li. New students should bring an umbrella if rain seems likely. After the tour, proceed to Campus Safety for ID pictures (for students who still need ID cards).  Meet in front of Templeton Center (near Fields Dining Room).

Evening
Visit Fred Meyer Store to shop for your room OR relax and get some rest after your moving day.

Pioneer Express buses will leave campus for Fred Meyer at 7:40 and 8:38.  Returning buses will leave Fred Meyer for the return to campus at 8:24, 9:22 and 10:20. Don’t miss the last one!!!  Esther Bolatimi, Anna Lyubinina, Shane Carreira, and Shimpei Goto.

8:45 a.m.  Continental Breakfast and Opening Program (Note:  You should NOT eat breakfast in Fields Dining Room this morning). Join us in the Council Chamber instead. Take pictures of students for ISS electronic screen, if still not completed. (Yexing Li)

  • Collect manila envelopes for immigration documents (Vinaya Bharam and Jasmine Bruinooge). Students who forget the documents can bring them to the ISS later in the day.
  • Copy immigration documents. (Anna N Semi , Steephen Bokouende and Shimpei Goto will copy the documents at ISS).

English proficiency exam for international students. New students taking Test A should go inside the J. R. Howard Hall lobby area near the SQRC and first-floor classrooms.  You will be given a name tag that tells you where to go for your exam.  Volunteers Jaweal Hakoum, Jasmine Bruinooge,  and Minho Choi will guide you to the correct location. New students taking Test B should go to the Dubach computer lab in Templeton Student Center.  Jady Brown and Badral Batbold will make sure you know where to go. Dubach Computer Lab in Templeton Student Center, and J.R. Howard Hall Front Lobby.

2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.
TCK meeting (for US TCKs).  Meet Anna Lyubinina, TCK Intern, and learn about the TCK group.  Student Assistant:  Shane Carreira.  Trailroom, Templeton Center. 

5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Take one of your new friends to dinner with you and meet Shimpei Goto, Esther Bolatimi, and Steephen Bokouende, at the door. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

6:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m.
(OPTIONAL) 
Take a break and play frisbee. Student Assistants:  Christopher Breen, Shimpei Goto, and Anna Lyubinina. On the lawn between Stewart, Odell and Akin.

8:30 p.m.

Stamm West in Templeton Center.  Also, remember to check in with your RA this morning.  You will need to complete move-in paper work and sign up for the emergency registration system.  Do this with your RA sometime today before 3:00 p.m.  Student volunteers Christopher Breen, Minho Choi, and Vinaya Bharam will help you find your packet.

8:00 a.m. 10:45 a.m. English Proficiency Test B1 and B2 Continues, J.R. Howard Hall Room 102.

SEVIS/Immigration Requirements and Review of the General NSO Schedule: What you must know! Bridget Flaherty. Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber.

ISS staff and volunteers will return the following to you at the meeting: (1) passport and (2) I-20. Topics for this session include:

  • SEVIS requirements
  • Immigration obligations. (See handout)
  • Review of General NSO Schedule

The International Student/TCK and Academic Success. Panel discussion with Lewis & Clark professors and students. Speakers:  (in order) Jaweal Hakoum/ Sophomore, Jady Brown/Sophomore, and Shane Carreira/Junior, followed by Professor Jerry Harp of English and Core and Professor Anne Bentley of Chemistry.   Dr. Jeanne Lily, staff member of the Counseling Center, will share some ideas about balance and time management.  Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber.

12:30 p.m. — 1:30 p.m.
Lunch in Fields Dining Room/Templeton Center.

REQUIRED Measles Clinic for new undergraduate international & TCK students who have not met the Oregon measles requirement. Students will be escorted to Student Health Services for consultation and vaccinations. Student volunteers Anna N Semi and Yexing Li as well as ISS staff will guide new students from the ISS office to the health center beginning at 12:15 p.m.  Students may not register for classes until this measles vaccination requirement is met. AES students will do this during the first week of classes, September 5-8, and do not need to do the measles clinic today.  Templeton College Center/Student Health Services, lower floor.

Academic English Studies Orientation Session and Test B Results. 
Students beginning their studies in the Academic English Studies program should go to this session for specific orientation about the AES schedule, advising system, registration, and other important policies.  J. R. Howard Hall Room 122.

Davis Scholarship Information Session.
  New Davis Scholars should attend this session to learn the details of the Davis Scholarship at Lewis & Clark.  Attendance is required for new Davis Scholars. Bridget Flaherty, Brian White, Anastacia Dillon, Karen Fobert, and Cheri Blatner will present.  J.R. Howard Hall, Room 102.

Language Assistants and Dallaire Scholar J-1 SEVIS Validation.  Language Assistants (LAs) and J-1 Dallaire Scholar should meet Brian White, Associate Dean, for SEVIS registration. Please bring your passport and DS-2019 form.  Templeton Student Center, 3rd Floor/International Students and Scholars.

Employment Session.
(REQUIRED ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO WORK ON CAMPUS) What you need for on-campus employment.
