New Student Orientation Schedule For International Students and TCKs

Fall 2013

Note:  Student volunteers helping with International Student/TCK new student orientation should meet for training on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at 7:00 pm in the office of International Students & Scholars in Templeton Center.

 

Monday, August 26, 2013 (Arrival Day)

9 a.m. — 5 p.m.
New students arrive throughout the day. Transportation provided by International Students and Scholars (ISS), RAZ Transportation and White Van Shuttle (TEL 503-774-9755 or online at:  http://www.whitevanshuttle. com/). L&C Drivers: Brian White/ISS and Bridget Flaherty/ISS, L&C Student Greeter:  Noelle Balandi/Chad, Nepal. RAZ Transportation will provide a coach to meet Delta/Northwest Airlines Flight 618 from Tokyo at 8:45 am.  Emergency TEL: 503-768-7305 (Office of International Students & Scholars).

Students arriving by air on this day may move to campus upon arrival.

  • Students staying in hotels may move to campus between 9:30 a.m. — 12:00 Noon.
  • Students living with friends or relatives in Portland should move to campus between 2:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
  • Commuter students staying on campus for orientation may move in the following day (Tuesday, August 28). This is only for students who have made reservations with International Students and Scholars (ISS).

Students report to International Students and Scholars (ISS) to pick up packets, room assignments, keys, access cards, linen (if needed), room/telephone list, and emergency list.

Students can visit International Students and Scholars (ISS) to call home and inform parents of safe arrival. (Free calling card can be found in the packet).

Snacks will be available at International Students and Scholars (ISS).

Students take ID card pictures after settling in.  Danial Afzal, Alyssa Kurosu, and Zach Mouton can accompany students to Campus Safety.

11:45 a.m. — 1:00 p.m.  (Note:  Volunteers should stagger lunch times)
Lunch  for students who have arrived.  Asraa Jaber, Neil Murray, and Trushaa Castelino will be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 11:45 a.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.


1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks:

  • Take a picture for the ISS electronic screen. Kathleen Burckhardt and Kim Takinami will assist with pictures.
  • Waive the L&C health insurance plan, if you have private insurance.  Amanda Wickramasekera will assist.  Insurance waiver system can be found at:
  • Take a logistical tour of Templeton.  Checkout your mailbox, find the ATM, stop by the SAAB Tutoring Office, etc.  Tours at:  1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 p.m. Rohith Palem and Lame Ungwang will alternate leading the tours.
  • Get ID card at Campus Safety.

1:15 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students who have not completed forms or vaccinations for the Student Health Center, please check in at the International Student and Scholars Office.  Check you Info Sheet in your packet to see if your health forms are complete.  International Students and Scholars.

3:30p.m.
Open a bank account.  Michelle Phanthongphay and Carissa Fedchenko, representatives of US Bank, will be on campus to help international students set up a bank account.  Please bring your passport, your visa, and your I-94 card with you. Volunteers:  Nathan Ren, Josh Kaplan and Adrian Dabat will direct students to this session and help with copying.  Thayer Room in Templeton Center.

Visit the Lewis & Clark Bookstore.  If you need snack food, toiletries or want to start browsing for textbooks, learn where the bookstore is and make your purchases this afternoon.  Open until 5:00 p.m.

5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Hosts Amanda Wickramasekera, Mengying He, and Zach Mouton will meet be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 5:00 p.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

5:45 p.m.
Tour of Campus led by Nathan Ren, Neil Murray, and Asraa Jaber. New students should bring an umbrella if rain seems likely. After the tour, proceed to Campus Safety for ID pictures (for students who still need ID cards).  Meet in front of Templeton Center (near Fields Dining Room).

Evening
Visit Fred Meyer Store to shop for your room OR relax and get some rest after your moving day.

Pioneer Express buses will leave campus for Fred Meyer at 7:04 and 8:04.  Returning buses will leave Fred Meyer will leave for the return to campus at 7:52, 8:52, and 9:52. Don’t miss the last one!!!  Josh Kaplan, Adrian Dabat, Alyssa Kurosu, and  Lame Ungwang.

8:45 a.m.
Commuter students living on campus during orientation can check in at International Students and Scholars (ISS). Commuter students can store their bags in ISS until 4:45 p.m. when they can move in to their rooms.

8:45 a.m. Continental Breakfast and Opening Program (Note:  You should NOT eat breakfast in Fields Dining Room this morning). Join us in the Council Chamber instead. Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber. Please bring the following items with you: (1) your NSO packet, (2) your passport, (3) your I-20, and (4) your I-94 Arrival/Departure Card.

  Kim Takinami and Asraa Jaber will explain tasks you need to complete as you arrive.

  • Take pictures of students for ISS photo wall, if still not completed. (Kathleen Burckhardt/photos )
  • Collect manila envelopes for immigration documents (Kim Takinami and Asraa Jaber). Students who forget the documents can bring them to the ISS later in the week.
  • Copy immigration documents. (Lame Ungwang  and Rohith Palem will copy the documents at ISS).

AES off-campus students meet with Susan Wynne/AES at the front of the Council Chambers instead of going to meet the Campus Living staff.

12:00 p.m. — 12:15 p.m.
Meet with Campus Living staff, Area Directors (ADs) and Resident Advisors (RAs).  Council Chamber/Templeton Center.  ADs and RAs will meet in groups.  Look for the signs for your hall and meet your AD/RA below the sign.

For late arrivals, the meetings will occur in:

12:15 p.m. — 12:50 p.m.
Lunch with Campus Living staff. Your Area Director (AD) and Resident Advisor (RA) will accompany you to lunch. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

1:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.
English proficiency exam for international students. (Look on the paper in your arrival packet to see which test you must take, Test A or Test B).  Tests will be administered in various locations in Howard Hall.  Come to Howard Room 102 first.   Volunteers:  Kathleen Burckhardt, Josh Kaplan, Mengying He and Danial Afzal. Howard Hall Room 102.

2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.
TCK meeting (for US TCKs).  Meet Kim Takinami, TCK Intern, and learn about the TCK group.  Student Assistants:  Nathan Ren and Adrian Dabat and Alyssa Kurosu.  Trailroom, Templeton Center. 

3:45 p.m. 
Special Orientation for IREX students.   IREX scholars Viktoria Shvydchenko and Bakhtovar Tagayaliev meet with Brian White to discuss UGRAD program guidelines. International Students and Scholars.

5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Take one of your new friends to dinner with you and meet Nathan Ren, Adrian Dabat and Lame Ungwang, at the door. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.

6:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m.
(OPTIONAL) 
Take a break and play frisbee. Student Assistants: Neil Murray, Noelle Balandi, and Danial Afzal. On the lawn between Stewart, Odell and Akin.

8:30 p.m.
(OPTIONAL)
 Games Night. Come play cards and board games. Hosted by  Trushaa Castelino and Zach Mouton. Akin Hall Lounge.

This morning during free time, remember to pick up your “real” NSO packet for new students. Stamm West in Templeton Center.  Also, remember to check in with your RA this morning.  You will need to complete move-in paper work, get your laundry card, and sign up for the emergency registration system.  Do this with your RA sometime today before 3:00 p.m.

9:00 a.m. — 10:00 a.m.
SEVIS/Immigration Requirements and Review of the General NSO Schedule: What you must know! Bridget Flaherty with Mengying He and Rohith Palem. Templeton Student Center, *Council Chamber. ISS staff will return the following to you at the meeting: (1) passport, (2) I-20, (3) I-94 card. Topics for this session include:

  • SEVIS requirements
  • Immigration obligations. (See handout)
  • Review of General NSO Schedule

The International Student/TCK and Academic Success. Panel discussion with Lewis & Clark professors and students. Speakers:  (in order) Trushaa Castelino/ Sophomore, and Nathan Ren/Sophomore, followed by Professors Jerry Harp of English and Core, Professor Anne Bentley of Chemistry, and Professor Oren Kosansky of Sociology and Anthropology.   Jeanne Lily, staff member of the Counseling Center, will join us to outline counseling services. Miles Paterson, ASLC Chief Justice, will discuss briefly Lewis & Clark’s academic integrity policy Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber.

12:30 p.m. — 1:15 p.m.
Lunch in Fields Dining Room/Templeton Center.

English Proficiency Test A:
1:15 p.m.
  Davis Scholars:  go to AES Office (Albany 104) to pick up your test result.  Proceed to Davis Scholarship Info Session at 2:00 p.m.  See below for details.
1:45 p.m.  Other Test A students:  go to AES Office (Albany 104) to pick up your test result.

English Proficiency Test B (continued): Complete Part 2 of the English exam
1:15-3:00 p.m. If you took TEST B on Tuesday, return to Howard 102 to complete the exam. Test results will be available at 9:30 on Thursday.

Note:  If you have a conflict at your appointed time, you can go to the AES office at any time between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for your test result.

Before or After Getting Your English Exam Results:
REQUIRED Measles Clinic for students who have not met the Oregon measles requirement.  Students will be escorted to Student Health Services for consultation and vaccinations. Student volunteers and ISS staff will guide new students from the AES Office to the health center.  Students may not register for classes until this measles vaccination requirement is met. Student volunteers Alyssa Kurosu and Josh Kaplan can show you where to go.  Templeton College Center/Student Health Services, lower floor.

2:00 p.m
Davis Scholarship Information Session.
  After getting their English Exam results, new Davis Scholars should attend this session to learn the details of the Davis Scholarship at Lewis & Clark.  Attendance is required for new Davis Scholars, unless excused for English Test B.  John Howard Hall, Room 124.

3:00 p.m.
Language Assistants SEVIS Registration.  Language Assistants (LAs) should meet Brian White, Associate Dean, for SEVIS registration. Templeton Student Center, 3rd Floor/International Students and Scholars.

3:15 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Employment Session.
(REQUIRED ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO WORK ON CAMPUS) What you need for on-campus employment. Bridget Flaherty, Assistant Director of ISS, Scott Munden, Student Employment Coordinator and Carolyn Locke, Admin Specialist of ISS. Student assistants: Lame Ungwang and Danial Afzal.   • Applying for an on-campus job.
  • Applying for a Social Security Number.
