New Student Orientation For International Students and TCKs
Fall 2011
Note: Student volunteers helping with International Student/TCK new student orientation should meet for training on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the office of International Students & Scholars in Templeton Center.
Monday, August 22, 2011 (Arrival Day)
9 a.m. — 5 p.m.
New students arrive throughout the day. Transportation provided by International Students and Scholars (ISS), RAZ Transportation and White Van Shuttle (TEL 503-774-9755 or online at: http://www.whitevanshuttle. com/). L&C Drivers: Brian White/ISS and Bridget Flaherty/ISS. RAZ Transportation will provide a coach to meet Delta/Northwest Airlines Flight 618 from Tokyo at 8:45 am. (Charter ID# 31191; Movement #43421). Emergency TEL: 503-768-7305 (Office of International Students & Scholars).
Students arriving by air on this day may move to campus upon arrival.
- Students staying in hotels may move to campus between 9:30 a.m. — 12:00 Noon.
- Students living with friends or relatives in Portland should move to campus between 2:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
- Commuter students staying on campus for orientation may move in the following day (Tuesday, August 23). This is only for students who have made reservations with International Students and Scholars (ISS).
Students report to International Students and Scholars (ISS) to pick up packets, room assignments, keys, access cards, linen (if needed), room/telephone list, and emergency list.
Students settle into their rooms. The following student volunteers will be on hand to help students move into their rooms: Yu-Ting (Amy) Huang/China, Lupin Won/ South Korea/China/TCK, Donghao Sun/China, Danial Afzal/Pakistan, Osaebea Amoako/Ghana, Zambia, Swaziland, Marko Demkiv/Ukraine, Canada, Tajalli Dunn/USA, Czech Republic, Asraa Jaber/ Iraq, USA, Lin Jiang (Aki)/ China, Minju (Rosa) Kim/Korea, Nikhil Mahapatra/India, Singapore, Johann Maradiaga/Honduras, Canada, Sara Miller/USA, Spain, Amanda Wickramasekera/Sri Lanka, Singapore, Tom Wilson/USA, Ira Yeap/Thailand, Canada. (Note: let students have at least 90 minutes to settle into their rooms before they return to the ISS).
Students can visit International Students and Scholars (ISS) to call home and inform parents of safe arrival. (Free calling card can be found in the packet).
Snacks will be available at International Students and Scholars (ISS).
Students take ID card pictures after settling in. Amanda Wickramasekera, Tajalli Dunn, and Asraa Jaber can accompany students to Campus Safety.
11:45 a.m. — 1:00 p.m. (Note: Volunteers should stagger lunch times)
Lunch for students who have arrived. Sara Miller, Danial Afzal, and Marko Demkiv will be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 11:45 a.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks:
- Take a picture for the ISS electronic screen. Lupin Won and Osaebea Amoako will assist with pictures.
- Waive the L&C health insurance plan, if you have private insurance. Rosa Kim will assist. Insurance waiver system can be found at:
- Take a logistical tour of Templeton. Checkout your mailbox, find the ATM, stop by the SAAB Tutoring Office, etc. Tours at: 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 p.m. Tom Wilson and Amy Huang will alternate leading the tours.
- Get ID card at Campus Safety.
1:15 p.m. — 4:00 p.m.
Students who have not completed forms or vaccinations for the Student Health Center, please check in at the International Student and Scholars Office. Check you Info Sheet in your packet to see if your health forms are complete. International Students and Scholars.
3:30p.m.
Open a bank account. Matthew Haussler, a representative of US Bank, will be on campus to help international students set up a bank account. Please bring your passport, your visa, and your I-94 card with you. Volunteers: Johann Maradiaga, Lin Jiang (Aki) and Ira Yeap will direct students to this session and help with copying. (Provide “key” for downstairs copier). Thayer Room in Templeton Center.
Visit the Lewis & Clark Bookstore. If you need snack food, toiletries or want to start browsing for textbooks, learn where the bookstore is and make your purchases this afternoon. Open until 5:00 p.m.
5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Hosts Amanda Wickramasekera, Donghao Sun, and Tajalli Dunn will meet be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 5:00 p.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
5:45 p.m.
Tour of Campus led by Nikhil Mahapatra, Sara Miller, and Asraa Jaber. New students should bring an umbrella if rain seems likely. After the tour, proceed to Campus Safety for ID pictures (for students who still need ID cards). Meet in front of Templeton Center (near Fields Dining Room).
Evening
Remainder of evening free for rest and settling in.

8:45 a.m.
Commuter students living on campus during orientation can check in at International Students and Scholars (ISS). Commuter students can store their bags in ISS until 4:45 p.m. when they can move in to their rooms.
8:45 a.m. Continental Breakfast and Opening Program (Note: You should NOT eat breakfast in Fields Dining Room this morning). Join us in the Council Chamber instead. Templeton Student Center, Council Chambers. Please bring the following items with you: (1) your NSO packet, (2) your passport, (3) your I-20, and (4) your I-94 Arrival/Departure Card.
Osaebea Amoako and Rosa Kim will explain tasks you need to complete as you arrive.
- Take pictures of students for ISS photo wall, if still not completed. (Lupin Won/photos )
- Collect manila envelopes for immigration documents (Osaebea Amoako and Johann Maradiaga). Students who forget the documents can bring them to the ISS later in the week.
- Copy immigration documents. (Marko Demkiv and Donghao Sun will copy the documents at ISS).

AES off-campus students meet with Susan Wynne/AES at the front of the Council Chambers instead of going to meet the Campus Living staff.
11:45 a.m. — 12:15 p.m.
Meet with Campus Living staff, Area Directors (ADs) and Resident Advisors (RAs). Council Chambers/Templeton Center. ADs and RDs will meet in groups. Look for the signs for your hall and meet your AD/RD below the sign.
For late arrivals, the meetings will occur in:
- Stewart/Odell/Akin with Charlie Ahlquist: Remain in the Council Chamber.
- Forest Hall with David Rosengard: Int’l Students & Scholars Office
- Platt-Howard/Hartzfeld Halls with Natasha Begin: Thayer Rooms.

Note: Commuter students should also plan to attend this session and should meet in with the RD and RA from the hall where you are staying.
12:15 p.m. — 1:00 p.m.
Lunch with Campus Living staff. Your Area Director (AD) and Resident Advisor (RA) will accompany you to lunch. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
1:10 p.m.
Meet for the English exam at the International Students and Scholars (ISS) office. A student volunteer will escort you to the testing rooms. Student Volunteers: Marko Demkiv, Nikhil Mahapatra, Donghao Sun and Danial Afzal. Templeton Student Center/International Students and Scholars Office.
1:20 p.m. — 3:45 p.m.
English proficiency exam for international students. (Look on the paper in your arrival packet to see which test you must take). TEST A will be administered in Miller 207. TEST B will be administered in Miller 208. Interviews will be in Miller 209 and 210 (Placement results may be obtained from the AES/Academic English Studies Office Wednesday afternoon). Volunteers: Marko Demkiv, Nikhil Mahapatra, Donghao Sun and Danial Afzal. Miller Center for the Humanities, Rooms 207, 208, 209 & 210.
2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.
TCK meeting (for US TCKs). Meet Osaebea Amoako, TCK Intern, and learn about the TCK group. Student Assistants: Tajalli Dunn and Lupin Won. Trailroom, Templeton Center.
3:45 p.m.
Special Orientation for IREX student. IREX scholars Nazik Muradova and Mykhaylo Vakula meet with Brian White to discuss program guidelines. International Students and Scholars.
5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Take one of your new friends to dinner with you and meet Aki Jiang, Rosa Kim and Tom Wilson, at the door. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
6:00 p.m. — 7:00 p.m.

Jeanne Lily, staff member of the Counseling Center, will join us to outline counseling services. Miles Paterson, ASLC Chief Justice, will discuss briefly Lewis & Clark’s academic integrity policyTempleton Student Center, Council Chambers.

English test results/AES advising
All students meet individually with an AES advisor to review their test scores. Meeting times are staggered to reduce waiting times. If your last name begins with
“R-Z”: meet at 1:15 to 1:45 p.m.
“M-O”: meet at 1:45 to 2:15 p.m.
“G-L”: meet at 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.
“A-F”: meet at 2:45 to 3:15 p.m.

Note: If you have a conflict at your appointed time, you can go to the AES office at any time between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for your test result.
Before or After Getting Your English Exam Results:
REQUIRED Measles Clinic for students who have not met the Oregon measles requirement. Students will be escorted to Student Health Services for consultation and vaccinations. Student volunteers and ISS staff will guide new students from the AES Office to the health center. Students may not register for classes until this measles vaccination requirement is met.
