(Tentative) New Student Orientation For International Students and TCKs
Fall 2010
Note: Student volunteers helping with International Students/TCK new student orientation should meet for training on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the Gray Room of Templeton Center.
Monday, August 23, 2010 (Arrival Day)
9 a.m. -- 5 p.m.
New students arrive throughout the day. Transportation provided by International Students and Scholars (ISS) and RAZ Transportation. L&C Drivers: Greg Caldwell/ISS, Brian White/ISS, and Aaron Upsal/L&C student. RAZ transportation will provide a coach to meet Delta/Northwest Airlines Flight #786 from Tokyo at 8:40 am. (Confirmation #: 21475. Emergency TEL: 503-684-3322 X777 or X778).
Students arriving by air on this day may move to campus upon arrival.
- Students staying in hotels may move to campus between 9:30 -- 11:45 am.
- Students living with friends or relatives in Portland should move to campus between 2:00 -- 4:00 pm.
- Commuter students staying on campus for orientation may move in the following day (Tuesday, August 25). This is only for students who have made reservations with International Students and Scholars (ISS).
Students report to International Students and Scholars (ISS) to pick up packets, meal cards, room assignments, keys, access cards, linen (if needed), room/telephone list, and emergency list.
Students settle into their rooms. The following student volunteers will be on hand to help students move into their rooms: Aaron Upsal/ US, David Shackelford/ US, Magali Blanco/US/Mexico/TCK, Kasia Chaberski/US/Poland/TCK, Osaebea Amoako/Ghana/TCK, Melanie Rama/Switzerland/TCK, Hitomi Masui/Japan, Daniel Bae/South Korea/South Africa/TCK, Mari Tsubota/Japan, Tomo Ueno/ Japan/TCK, Rolly Tshiunza/Zaire, Donghao Sun/China, Bonnie Wang/China, and James Chu/US/TCK. (Note: let students have at least 90 minutes to settle into their rooms before they return to International Students and Scholars).
Students can visit International Students and Scholars (ISS) to call home and inform parents of safe arrival. (Free calling card can be found in the packet).
Snacks will be available at International Students and Scholars (ISS).
Students take ID card pictures after settling in. Volunteers Melanie Rama, Aaron Upsal and Donghao Sun can accompany students to Campus Safety.
11:45 a.m. -- 1:00 p.m.
Lunch for students who have arrived. David Shackelford, Hitomi Masui, Bonnie Wang, and three NSO (New Student Orientation) volunteers will be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 11:45 a.m. to orient students to the dining room. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
1:00 p.m. -- 4:00 p.m.
Students stop by International Students and Scholars to complete several tasks:
- Take a picture for the ISO photo wall. Daniel Bae and Mari Tsubota will assist with pictures.
- Waive the L&C health insurance plan, if you have private insurance. David Shackelford will assist. Insurance waiver system can be found at:
- Take a logistical tour of Templeton. Checkout your mailbox, find the ATMs, stop by the SAAB Tutoring Office, etc. Tours at: 1:30, 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 p.m. Osaebea Amoako and Hitomi Masui will alternate leading the tours.
- Get ID card at Campus Safety.
4:00 p.m.
Open a bank account. Chris Hirai, a representative of US Bank, will be on campus to help international students set up a bank account. Please bring your passport, your visa, and your I-94 card with you. (Provide "key" for downstairs copier). Monteith Room in Templeton Center.
5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Hosts Magali Blanco, Tomo Ueno, and Kasia Chaberski will meet be at the door of Fields Dining Room at 5:00 p.m. to orient students to the dining room. Three NSO volunteers will also assist. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
6:00 p.m.
Tour of Campus led by David Shackelford, Magali Blanco, and Osaebea Amoako. Three L&C NSO volunteers will assist. New students should bring an umbrella if rain seems likely. After the tour, proceed to Campus Safety for ID pictures (for students who still need ID cards). Meet in front of Templeton Center (near Fields Dining Room).
7:00 p.m.
OPTIONAL Trip to Fred Meyer (Variety Store) for last-minute needs. Three vans (or possibly one large RAZ van) will be driven by Greg Caldwell, Brian White, and Aaron Upsal. Student Volunteers: Bonnie Wang, Melanie Rama, and James Chu will accompany students in the vans and Tomo Ueno will be stationed at Templeton. Meet in front of Templeton Center (near Fields Dining Room). Vans will depart Fred Meyer promptly at 8:15 pm and 9:00 pm.
Evening
Remainder of evening free for rest and settling in.

Commuter students living on campus during orientation can check in at International Students and Scholars (ISS). Commuter students can store their bags in ISS until 4:45 p.m. when they can move in to their rooms.
9:00 a.m. -- 9:20 a.m.
Continental breakfast. Templeton Student Center, Council Chambers. Please bring the following items with you: (1) your NSO packet, (2) your passport, (3) your I-20, and (4) your I-94 Arrival/Departure Card.
David Shackelford and Osaebea Amoako will explain tasks you need to complete as you arrive.
- Take pictures of students for ISS photo wall, if still not completed. (Daniel Bae/photos; Mari Tsubota/digital photos)
- Distribute manila envelopes for immigration documents (Rolly Tshiunza and James Chu). Students who forget the documents can bring them to the ISS later in the week.
- Collect and copy immigration documents. (Rolly Tshiunza and James Chu will take the documents to ISS to be copied).
9:20 a.m. -- 10:45 a.m.

- Introduction of staff and guests. Greg Caldwell, Associate Dean of Students.

Meet with Campus Living staff, Area Directors (ADs) and Resident Advisors (RAs). If you are assigned to:
- Stewart/Odell/Akin or the apartments (East, West or Roberts), meet Charlie Ahlquist (AD) in Akin Lounge.
- Forest Hall, meet David Rosengard (AD) in Tamarack Lounge.
- Platt-Howard/Hartzfeld Halls, meet Liv Edens in Platt Main Lounge.
- Copeland Hall, meet Ana Lopezrevoredo in Copeland Main Lounge.
Note: Commuter students should also plan to attend this session and should meet in the lounge of the hall where you are temporarily living. AES off-campus students should meet Susan Wynn at the front of the Council Chambers.
12:15 p.m. -- 1:00 p.m.
Lunch with Campus Living staff. Your Area Director (AD) and Resident Advisor (RA) will accompany you to lunch. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
1:10 p.m.
Meet for the English exam at the International Students and Scholars (ISS) office. A student volunteer will escort you to the testing rooms. Student Volunteers: Rolly Tshiunza, Bonnie Wang, and Mari Tsubota. Templeton Student Center/International Students and Scholars.
1:20 p.m. -- 3:45 p.m.
English exam for international students. (Look on the paper in your arrival packet to see which test you must take). TEST A will be administered in Miller 207. TEST B will be administered in Miller 208. Interviews will be in Miller 210 (Placement results may be obtained from the AES/Academic English Studies Office Wednesday afternoon). Volunteers: Rolly Tshiunza, Bonnie Wang, and Mari Tsubota. (Volunteers do not have to remain on duty during the English test, but should report back to the testing rooms at 2:45 pm to accompany students to the Student Health Center).
2:00 p.m. -- 3:30 p.m.
TCK meeting (for US TCKs). Meet Daniel Bae, TCK Intern, and learn about the TCK group. Student Assistant: Melanie Rama. Trailroom, Templeton Center.
3:45 p.m.
REQUIRED Measles Clinic for students who have not met the Oregon measles requirement. Students will be escorted to the Student Health Services for consultation and vaccinations. Brian White, ISS, will assist. Students may not register for classes until this requirement is met. Templeton College Center/Student Health Services, lower floor.
3:45 p.m.
Special Orientation for IREX students. IREX scholars Daria Kholiavko and Marianna Vardanyan meet Greg Caldwell to discuss program guidelines. International Students and Scholars.
5:00 p.m.
Dinner. Take one of your new friends to dinner with you and meet Aaron Upsal, Osabea Amoako and Daniel Bae, hosts, and NSO volunteers at the door. Templeton Student Center, Fields Dining Room.
6:00 p.m. -- 7:00 p.m.

Take a break and play frisbee. Student Assistants: Tomo Ueno, Magali Blanco, and Donghao Sun. On the lawn between Stewart, Odell and Akin.

All students meet individually with an AES advisor to review their test scores. Meeting times are staggered to reduce waiting times. If your last name begins with
