Jasin chose Lewis & Clark for its location in the Pacific Northwest and for its liberal arts education, and he hasn’t regretted it for a second!

Jasin grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city. Being half English and half Malay, he’s used to “being a foreigner,” so moving across the world to Portland wasn’t really a big deal. The International Students and Scholars office made it even easier, providing Jasin with friends and contacts in the Lewis & Clark international community. Jasin often participates in international student events on campus, especially those involving selections of international foods! Most notably, Jasin made a stellar DVD of the 2007 International Fair. After more than a year at Lewis & Clark, Jasin still hears, “Wow, you’re from Malaysia?” but he doesn’t mind. How many people can talk about their hometown and have people actually interested?

There’s a lot more to Jasin than being international! He loves the outdoors, and the Portland area has plenty to offer. Jasin is used to the hot, humid, and dense jungles of Malaysia, so the great open spaces of the Pacific Northwest and the seasonal changes have been an exciting change. Through College Outdoors, the Paddling Club, the Climbing Club and friends, Jasin has rafted down the Deschutes River, gone white-water kayaking on the Clackamas River, snowboarded and climbed Mount Hood, and camped all over the place. Jasin’s particular outdoor passion is rock climbing. He is currently the co-president of the Climbing Club and has led several climbing trips around Oregon, as well as organized a successful Lewis & Clark event at a local climbing gym. But if he has a lot of homework, Jasin is still content to take a short break and go cycling or hiking in the forests in and around the Lewis & Clark campus.

Some may think Jasin spreads himself a bit thin, but there’s a lot of talent and energy for Jasin to spread around. He still figures out ways to participate in everything else Lewis & Clark has to offer. He works in the resource lab, helping students with publications and videos, plays with the Lewis & Clark rugby club, attends lectures and symposiums (The International Affairs Symposium is his favorite!), and usually still gets his homework done. And of course, when the weekend comes and its time to take a break, Jasin enjoys a good party, generously provided by the Lewis & Clark student community.
