Mihret Belay Teklemichael, Class of 2012
Davis United World College Scholar
Pearson UWC of the Pacific (Canada)
I was born in a small town called Debre Zeyt about an hour away from the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. I spent all my life there until I got the scholarship to go to Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific in Canada. I attended a catholic elementary school taught by sisters from all over the world in Debre Zeyt and then transferred to the only public high school in my town when I entered 9th grade.
As the town I lived in was not that big, there were not a variety of things to do, but my friends and I never gave up in making up things to do in our free time. I was involved in many clubs in my high school. Now, as I enter Lewis & Clark, I am interested in doing volunteer work.
Learning about UWC from my school principal was very exciting, especially given that UWC was a great place to do different new things and learn a lot from other people from all around the world. It’s true that the application and admission processes were not easy, but once I found myself with four roommates from totally different places, I found the experience fascinating. I realized I would not have been able to meet all of these people if I had not attended UWC of the Pacific. Being immersed in Canadian culture for two years during my stay-at school was also another exciting experience.
I chose Lewis and Clark because of its size, attention given to international and global issues and its affordability due to the combination of the Davis and Lewis & Clark scholarships. And once I arrived on the L&C campus and was able to see the actual life of the college, I realize that I had made the right choice.
I am looking forward to being involved in outdoor activities in the College and discovering the academic world of a liberal arts education. Another plan of mine is to make my four years at Lewis & Clark as educational and enjoyable as possible.
