TCK Advisory Board 2009-2010

History and Goals:

The TCK board was first created in the Fall of 2001 with the first TCK intern. The board meets once a week, and the members serve as advisors who generate ideas and plans that the TCK intern will then set into motion. Their main goal is to promote events and advise the TCK intern on projects that they feel will be most effective and support the cause of the TCK group.

  • Will bring up new ideas to the board and also lead TCK Thursdays themselves.

2)Multicultural Affairs Leader:

  • Will be in contact with Shavette McGhee and the Office of Multicultural Affairs to assist with LINCS and other programs.

3)TCK Representative to ISLC:

  • Will be chosen by the executive board of ISLC.
  • Represent TCKs on ISLC, and act as a bridge between the two groups.

4)Career Advising Representative:

  • Will plan career workshops for TCKs and International students.
  • Will also work closely with the 3CE staff to make them aware of TCKs and their unique issues.

5)Off-campus Trip Organizer:

  • Will primarily work on events that are off-campus (e.g. Ethnic Dinner Trips to local restaurants, trips to watch basketball games etc.)
  • Will also work with College Outdoors to plan trips for TCKs

6)Conversation Group Programmer:

  • Will work with the TCK Intern to plan and run the Conversation Group Program.

TCK Board Members 2009-2010:

raymondterhune.jpg

Raymond Kunikane Terhune, Born and raised in Japan, Raymond has the features of an 18 year old, the mind of a wise old grandpa, and the heart of a child. Intending to major in Biochemistry he is said to be the sexiest man on the planet (if not the universe). Because he grew up in the Kansai area he speaks in a strong Osaka dialect which is know to be the most comedic dialect in Japan. He also plays the alto-saxophone, sings, and even acts (even worked with the Peking Opera once). Although he may seem way too out of the ordinary at first when you get to know him you will eventually understand the phrase "Everybody Loves Raymond" and how he himself loves everybody. Past nicknames include: Ray, Doraemon, Almond, Diamond, Lemon, and Daddy

Kim Takinami is a freshman TCK who was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, until the age of nine when she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii with her mother to receive an education in America. Having spent nine years immersed in the Japanese culture and the next nine years in the American culture, she feels in-tune with differences and similarities between the two societies, which has in turn taught her much about the concept of societies in general. By coming to Lewis & Clark College, she feels certain that she will be blessed with countless opportunities to meet people from cultures around the world to broaden her worldview.

Daniel Bae is a junior biochemistry major, and is this year's TCK Intern. He was born and raised in South Korea until the age of 6, when he and his family moved to Cape Town, South Africa. When he was 16 years old, his family moved again, this time to the US. Daniel's older brother, Joseph, began attending L&C in 2004, and Daniel chose to follow in his brother's footsteps. He previously served on the ISLC board, and he also worked as a Campus Living Adviser in Copeland Hall.

Tomo Ueno is currently a sophomore majoring in Economics. Two years after he was born in Japan, he and his family flew to Indonesia and lived there for eight years because of his father’s business. He returned to Japan and stayed there for two years, only to move again, this time to Bangladesh, where he lived for seven years and graduated from high school. Through living in several developing countries for more than fifteen years, Tomo became aware of one simple but crucial point: You can never fully understand other countries and their circumstances until you actually visit, talk and live with them, since the experience is always beyond conceivability.
