International Students and Scholars
Waseda Students - 2011/12
Lewis & Clark is pleased to welcome the following seventeen Waseda University students as part of the Waseda/TSA (Thematic Studies Abroad) Program for the 2011-12 academic year. Additionally, we are pleased to welcome two Waseda Exchange students.
Ryoichi Ando, from Yokohama, Japan, is interested in studying Gender and Communication in the U.S. He hopes that by taking classes in the U.S. he will gain a different perspective on these subjects. Furthermore, Ryoichi is interested in Psychology and Sociology because as of yet he has only gained a Japanese perspective of these topics. In addition to these academic interests, he enjoys swimming and playing volleyball.
Fumiya Enzaki is from Kanagawa, Japan, and he can’t wait to see the contrasting difference between the environment of his hometown to that of Portland, OR. He notes that L&C is a college surrounded by nature and that this will surely lead to a different kind of relationship with the university he is attending. Fumiya likes to play badminton and tennis, and hopes to broaden his horizons at L&C.
Masashi Harada was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. He enjoys playing and watching American football. Furthermore, Masashi is interested in environmental studies and languages. With these three things combined, he looks forward to enjoying a balance of sports and academic studies at Lewis & Clark.
Anri Inami, from Kawagoeshi, Japan, gained interest in the U.S. after taking American Politics at Waseda. There, they studied about Obama’s administration and the response to WikiLeaks. Anri is particularly interested in the different ways various countries view the events of American politics. In addition to looking forward to learning more about American politics in depth, she enjoys playing the drums and hopes to join an ensemble to continue her musical studies.
Wakana Ito is from Saga, Japan. Although she has studied linguistics, psychology, business, international relations, and bioethics, she finds all of them interesting subjects and has yet to decide her major. She hopes that by studying abroad and attending a liberal arts school, her search may come to an end at L&C! Wakana is part of the wind instrument music club at Waseda, and hopes to continue playing music.
Anna Kiyonaga was born and raised in Tokyo. She enjoys playing badminton and studying foreign languages. Anna believes that one can learn a lot from learning a new language, and so far she can speak English and Spanish in addition to Japanese. She looks forward to possibly exploring a new language as well as seeing everything Oregon has to offer.
Kotaro Maki, from Matsuyama, Japan, is an ultimate frisbee player and enthusiast. In addition to looking forward to joining the ultimate frisbee team at Lewis & Clark, Kotaro has an interest in international relations and business. He hopes to make use of his short time at L&C by making many new friends, learning all he can about English, and applying his academic studies to the world outside of class.
Shota Morikawa was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, although he grew up in Hyogo, Japan. His interests include music, English, and economics. Shota hopes to pursue teaching English as a second language in his academic goals as well as to study economics.
Michihiro Nakaguchi is from Kanagawa, Japan and looks forward to seeing continents other than Asia for the first time. He enjoys playing and watching tennis outside of school. Although he is unsure of his major, he is excited to study at L&C for its balanced curriculum and wide range of subjects.
Takezo Nakamatsu hails from Kamakura, Japan. He greatly enjoys martial arts, practicing both kendo and judo. His academic interests include: international relations, business, foreign languages, and economics. Takezo looks forward to becoming a part of L&C’s volunteer community and taking part in Building A Global Community
Misaki Ogawa is from Toyonaka, Japan, but has lived and studied in the U.K. and Netherlands. She looks forward to adding the U.S. to her list of countries and meeting new people. Misaki believes that broadening her horizons has ultimately led her to becoming both a better student and a better person. In her free time she enjoys playing badminton.
Masashi Ohno was born and raised in Kanagawa, Japan. He enjoys playing basketball, and in fact his first experience traveling overseas was to see an NBA game! Masashi is interested in international relations, and more specifically in sports management and business. He looks forward to having experiences in the U.S. that will make his vision wider and his identity stronger.
Maya Otsuka comes from Kanagawa, Japan. She notes that speaking a foreign language is so much more than an academic accomplishment: providing both a connection to a new culture, as well as a foundation for other accomplishments and experiences in life. She hopes to study international relations at Lewis and Clark.
Taku Shiozawa is from Kanagawa, Japan. He is particularly excited about the internship and volunteer opportunities available at Lewis and Clark. Taku notes that international cultural understanding is a very important aspect of the world today, and is interested in participating in an international organization to further these goals.
Takeshi Shiraishi was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan but notes that Oregon is “a place of scenic beauty.” He is interested in exploring all Oregon has to offer, both within the larger frame of U.S. culture as well as within L&C culture. He hopes to study international business relations while studying abroad.
Yasuo Suwabe is from Niigata, Japan and enjoys playing both baseball and basketball. He is looking forward to studying business and international relations at Lewis & Clark, and applying his knowledge of English to his academic studies. He notes that communication is very important in the world of business and is excited to further his English-speaking abilities.
Ken Suzuki was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and looks forward to taking advantage of every opportunity available to him during study abroad. In his free time he enjoys playing soccer. He is excited to meet more international students and to experience a variety of different cultures.
Exchange Students
Jie Huang grew up in Suzhou, China, unlike most Waseda exchange students. He is interested in studying law, and first became aware of L&C when he discovered that it has one of the top five biggest law libraries in the country! As well as preparing for law school, Jay spends his time playing soccer, sprinting track, and participating in theater arts.
Ayumi Sugiyama first became interested in studying abroad in the U.S. after participating in a non-profit organization in Japan that works with immigrants who have trouble communicating with Japanese natives. This led her to explore study abroad options in hopes of furthering her knowledge about sociology and anthropology. Ayumi is excited to experience the multicultural background of the U.S. and to further her goal of helping those in need.
