We believe that growing a unified online community best serves our constituencies, strengthens the reputation of Lewis & Clark as a whole, and offers the most effective communication strategy.

PubCom maintains an official Lewis & Clark presence on Facebook (Undergraduate, Graduate, Law), Twitter, Linkedin (Undergraduate, Law), Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. In addition, we assist departments, organizations, and other official entities of Lewis & Clark in establishing blogs through blogs.lclark.edu, a Wordpress multiblog site managed by PubCom.
Lewis & Clark’s presence on social media sites is an extension of the college’s identity. As such, PubCom is charged with building and maintaining the college’s online presence both in its visual identity and content.
If they create their own social media presence, departments and offices must be prepared to maintain it and keep it updated, as they would with a department web page.
Any department exploring the idea of creating its own presence on a social media site is asked to confer with the PubCom to discuss the process and address profile naming conventions, graphics needs, etc.
Before creating a separate social media presence for their office or administrative department, members of the campus community should consider the following:
- What is our goal of using social media? (For example, is there a group we are trying to reach with social media? What would we like them to know?)
- Do we have sufficient staff resources to maintain a social media presence?
- Is our departmental web page receiving adequate attention to make adding new communication responsibilities seem reasonable?
- Is there a need for an academic or year-round account or is our need time specific?
- Would we better served by working through the main Lewis & Clark channels?
- Can we build a robust online community to effectively communicate information or are we better served using other outlets?
Inactivity on any social media channel is considered detrimental to Lewis & Clark’s online identity and PubCom will ask individuals or departments using the Lewis & Clark name to consider shutting them down if they are not maintained.
Regardless of the service used (including those not listed above or below), community members should notify PubCom of all social media accounts in use by Lewis & Clark entities, along with a primary contact responsible for the account.
PubCom maintains three official Facebook pages for Lewis & Clark—one representing each school. Each school page is managed in conjunction with primary communicators for the respective school.
Requests for college affiliated Facebook pages will be handled by the Web Content and Social Media Manager. Administrator privileges for the page will be granted to the person or persons responsible for maintaining the page content. The Web Content and Social Media Manager must always hold an administrator position on any Facebook page. Learn more about Facebook’s terms for pages.
The cover images for all Lewis & Clark Facebook pages will maintain a consistent graphic identity that is approved through PubCom.
Lewis & Clark Facebook groups may be created at any time. Facebook pages offer certain advantages over Facebook groups, but also come with additional responsibilities. Learn more about the differences between pages and groups. Anyone uncertain about whether to create a page or a group is encouraged to contact Michael Mannheimer.
PubCom reserves the administrative right to shut down Facebook pages that go dormant for more than six months.
Twitter accounts may be created by the individuals responsible for posting updates. Before creating an account for his or her department, a staff or faculty member should contact PubCom to discuss naming conventions. A department email address or alias must be used when registering the account to ensure that a point of contact can always be reached.
Getting your video on YouTube
PubCom maintains three official YouTube channels for Lewis & Clark—one representing each school. A community member interested in posting a video to any of our channels should contact the Director of Mulitmedia and Internal Communications Vanessa Holmgren (503-768-7992 or email@example.com).
Any department or individual exploring the idea of creating a YouTube channel is asked to confer with PubCom to discuss the process and address profile naming conventions, graphics needs, etc.
Please consider that once channel access is granted, departments and offices must be prepared to maintain the channel with a reasonable amount of fresh content—as they would with a department webpage. For community members who are considering creating blogs that will serve as official channels for institutional entities at the college—a department, a publication, a student organization, a long-standing course—PubCom can create a unique blogs.lclark.edu address and help strategize on best blogging practices.
The decision to offer blogs.lclark.edu hosting will be determined after meeting with the representatives requesting the blog and discussion about who will be maintaining the blog and whether it is a manageable and realistic undertaking with regard to time and personnel resources.
The availability of Wordpress support, decisions on the installation of themes, plugins and other extras are at the discretion of PubCom/NewMedia and based upon workload priority.
Beginning in FY 2011-2012, Lewis & Clark will cease publishing faculty members’ personal blogs on the institution’s servers, and will encourage professors who currently blog at lclark.edu to move their blogs to an outside host.
This change in policy/practice does not affect professors’ teaching blogs; i.e. blogs used specifically as a resource for their classes, as a home for syllabi, links to readings, etc.
