H1N1 Flu Virus News and Information
What to do if you experience flu-like symptoms
- Avoid contact with others. Community members (students, faculty, staff) who are sick with flu-like illness (fever with cough and/or sore throat) should isolate themselves for at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100 degrees F), or signs of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. This isolation should extend to not coming to work, attending classes, internships, field placements, student activities, athletics, and other events.
- Contact your health care provider. Students who are experiencing flu-like illness should telephone the Student Health Service to report their illness and determine whether they need medical consultation. Students who have off-campus providers, my choose to contact them as well. Employees (faculty and staff) should contact their individual providers for their procedures.
- If you must leave your residence/home (e.g., to seek medical care), you should cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. A surgical loose-fitting mask can be helpful if you have access to it, but a tissue or other covering is appropriate as well.
- Students who need to isolate themselves need to contact their faculty by e-mail or phone as soon as possible to communicate their situation. Faculty have been instructed that they should not impose academic penalties on students for reasonable periods of isolation.
