We encourage families to consider signing up for both the basic plan and the major medical buy-up (Optional Supplemental Plan), even if they have other coverage.  Why?

Some families assume that their own medical insurance will provide adequate access to a provider network in Portland.  While this is sometimes true, sometimes it is not true, especially in the case of some out-of-state HMO’s.  Our Aetna Student Health Plan offers access to a robust local provider network.  It also offers a very low deductible ($50) each academic year, and provides coverage for learning disability testing. 

Please note that the basic student health insurance plan has a relatively low cap of $25,000 per academic year.  The basic plan by itself is not designed as a major medical plan, but rather to supplement other insurance coverage that a student might have (e.g., HMO coverage back home, or major medical coverage through their parents). If you plan to purchase the college health insurance plan with the idea that this coverage will be the only coverage your son/daughter has, we strongly encourage you to purchase both the basic plan and the major medical buy-up.   By paying just $160 more per semester over the cost of the basic plan, your son/daughter will be enrolled for $100,000 in coverage per academic year.   Please click here for a description of the plan, including covered services and exclusions, and click here to read our 2011-2012 Frequently Asked Questions.

Aetna Student Health offers online enrollment for those students who wish to purchase the Optional Major Medical buy-up (Optional Supplemental Plan).  In the Summer 2011 semesters, the premium for the Optional Major Medical buy-up is $154 per semester.  In Fall/Spring/Summer of 2011-12, the premium will be $160 per semester.  This must be purchased by the appropriate deadline each semester. The applicable enrollment deadlines are:

• Undergraduate Deadline Dates:  Summer - 06/10/11; Fall - 9/15/11; Spring - 2/1/12; Summer - 6/7/12.

• Law Student Deadline Dates: Summer - 06/30/11; Fall - 9/15/11; Spring - 2/1/12; Summer - 6/20/12

• Graduate Student Deadline Dates: Summer 07/07/11; Fall - 10/1/11; Spring - 2/1/12; Summer - 7/4/12.  Summer Group “A” - 6/7/12; Summer Group “B” - 7/15/12; Summer Group C - 8/23/12.
