Beijing Modern Dance has been creating an international stir with its high-energy, thoroughly contemporary movement that has made it one of Asia’s most exciting dance companies. Founded in 1995, Beijing Modern Dance is made of up 14 dancers from a variety of dance disciplines, who, by choosing modern dance, consciously gave up the security that comes with government-supported traditional or ethnic dance. Under the Artistic Direction of Willy Tsao, Beijing Modern Dance will make its Portland debut with a fascinating program that will demonstrate the courage of young, talented Chinese artists to express themselves through “the incomparable power of modern dance to touch the human heart” (China Cultural News).
