"Inventing an American Icon: The Statue of Liberty"

Monday, March 3, 7:30 p.m.

Templeton Student Center, Council Chamber

Albert Boime received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He is one of the pioneers of social art history that has formed the foundation of his writing and teaching at UCLA since 1979. He has now completed three volumes of a projected six-volume series on the subject. His most recent book is The Unveiling of the National Icons: A Plea for Patriotic Iconoclasm in a Nationalist Era.

Of his recent book, one reviewer wrote: "His intention in seeking to persuade people that they can be shapers of meaning is admirable, and if too many of his interpretations are farfetched, he can also be perceptive.... Still, no one who reads 'The Unveiling of the National Icons' is likely to look at our national monuments in quite the same way again."
