Director General of the World Health Organization and former Prime Minister of Norway

In Critical Condition: World Health and Security

Thursday, 7 p.m., March 11, 2004

With HIV/AIDS, SARS, tuberculosis, and bio-terrorism threatening the health and safety of nearly every country of the world, Dr. Brundtland has effectively lead the U.N.’s World Health Organization (WHO) to meet these and other world health challenges. Dr. Brundtland is a champion of sustainable development and the link between the environment and health. This conviction developed during her many years as a physician, Norway’s Minister of Health, and Minister of the Environment. In the 1980’s she gained international recognition as the chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission). She was the youngest person and the first woman ever to hold the office of Prime Minister in Norway, a post she held for more than 10 years.
