9th Annual Environmental Studies Symposium
Beyond Environmentalism?
Debating New Ideas and Strategies
Monday-Wednesday
3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. sessions
October 2-4
Templeton Student Center
Some have claimed that American environmentalism has lost its intellectual credibility and political effectiveness and stands in need of fundamental change. Is there scholarly and pragmatic justification for this charge? If so, what new ideas and strategies would inform this post-environmentalist future? The Symposium features a variety of scholarly perspectives on these major questions facing contemporary environmentalism.
Join us for three days of vigorous academic debate among selected students and faculty from Lewis & Clark and nearby institutions of higher education as well as regional experts, all chosen by competition. This distinctive group will present and discuss talks on six related topics:
*Environmentalism: Birth, Death, and Future
*Climate: Time for a Change?
*Saving Species? Reconsidering Conservation in the Pacific Northwest
*Whose Nature? Taming a Wild Idea
*Local and Global: Rethinking Place
*New Political Strategies
These sessions are free and open to the general public.
