Aperture began in San Francisco in 1952 as a small periodical founded by some of the greatest photographers of all time, including Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White. Fifty years later, Aperture has grown into a multi-faceted organization that has generated over 400 books, a quarterly magazine, traveling exhibitions, and photography archives. Photography Past/Forward: Aperture at 50 is a survey of 164 photographs that not only traces the history of Aperture
Aperture, a not-for-profit organization devoted to photography and the visual arts, has organized this traveling exhibition and produced the accompanying publications.
