The Lewis and Clark College International Affairs Symposium is one of the most prestigious events within the Oregon academic and civic communities. It has been highly acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Chronicle of Higher Education.
The focus of the Symposium is controversy, emphasizing confrontation of opposing views. Organized by students, it concentrates on themes that reflect global interests and concerns. This year's symposium, Pledges of Allegiance? Identity in a Changing World, promises to continue in the tradition of excellence, and will be an asset to both the college community and the community at large.
Twelve speakers will address the symposium topics. Included among them are:
Professor Louis Kriesberg, Maxwell School, Syracuse University Louis Kriesberg is Maxwell Professor Emeritus of Social Conflict Studies at Syracuse University. His research areas include interstate, inter-communal, and social conflicts as well as resolution and nature of intractable conflicts.
Professor Catarina Kinnvall, Lund University, Sweden Catarina Kinvall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Lund University in Sweden. Her field of expertise is globalization and specifically, the effects of globalization on identity construction.
Khaled Ahmed, Consulting Editor, Daily Times, Pakistan Khaled Ahmed is the Consulting Editor of the Daily Times in Pakistan. He has published on identity politics in South Asia, the role of language in the nation-state, and nationalism and conflict with particular attention to the role of Islam in the state.
All sessions are free and open to the public, $3 for parking for afternoon sessions
