College of Arts and Sciences Summer Sessions Information for High School Students

For High School Students

Qualified high school students looking for a challenging academic experience may enroll in courses offered through Lewis & Clark Summer Sessions with the permission of the Director of Summer Programs.

High school students may enroll as day students only; we do not house high school-aged Summer Sessions students on campus at this time.

If you are interested in a residential program, take a look at our Fir Acres Workshop in Writing & Thinking.

Course Selection

Look at our Course List to see what classes interest you, and that you feel qualified to take. More details about the time and days each class is offered is on our Course Schedule page. High school students are limited to one course per 6-week session (a total of two per summer). If you have any questions about courses or requirements, please email casummer@lclark.edu or call the Director of Summer Programs at 503-768-7135.

Most classes offered in Summer Sessions provide 4 semester credits, and meet 8 hours per week. You can expect to do approximately two hours of outside work for every hour spent in class. It is important that you plan accordingly.

High school students who successfully complete courses at Lewis & Clark through enrollment in Summer Sessions or through the Templeton Scholars Program do not need to repeat the application process for enrollment in subsequent Summer Sessions.

Appplication & Registration Procedures

To register for summer courses, download and complete the Summer 2008 Registration and Payment Form, attach your deposit check and Personal Statement, and mail these materials to the address below. The registration deadline for high school students is Friday, June 13, 2008.

High school students seeking to take courses at Lewis & Clark for the first time will need to submit a personal statement, and provide a reference from a teacher or guidance counselor who is aware of your overall abilities and goals. S/he will need to complete the counselor/teacher reference form, attach a current copy of your high school transcript, and mail the packet to the address below. Please provide the teacher/counselor a stamped, addressed envelope for this purpose.

A second reference is required from an academic teacher with whom you have recently studied. The Teacher Reference Form should be completed by a teacher in the subject area most closely aligned with the class you would like to take at Lewis & Clark. Please provide a separate stamped, addressed envelope for this teacher’s use.

A Note About Credits Earned

It is important to note that attending a Lewis & Clark Summer Session class will not improve your chances of admission to the College. While success in any undergraduate-level summer course will help demonstrate your ability to succeed at L&C, the fact that the course was taken here will not carry greater weight in the admissions process.

Some high schools will grant credit towards graduation for college courses. Students applying to other colleges in the future should check with that institution's admissions office regarding the transferability of Lewis & Clark credits.
