MUS 105 - Introduction to World Music

Content: Examination of musics from around the world. Familiarity with a variety of musics, understanding them in their own terms and in relation to the cultures that produce them. Specific content may change from year to year.

This section, taught by Professor Parkhurst, will focus on ethnomusicology.

Ethnomusicology, as the study of music in the context of human life, involves both music that is geographically removed from us and music that is close at hand. In addition to exploring indigenous musics from a variety of world regions, this course will take advantage of Portland's rich array of summer music offerings. Students will engage in their own fieldwork while attending live music performances, whether at the Waterfront Blues Festival, Oregon Country Fair, or other summer festivals.
