3.11.4 Family Leave
The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Oregon Family Leave Act (OFLA) set forth provisions for family leaves of up to 12 weeks within a 12-month period for eligible employees.
Faculty who are at least .5 FTE and have been employed at the College for the immediately preceding six months may take family leaves for the following reasons: 1) to recover from or to seek treatment for a serious health condition, including disability or recovery from pregnancy or childbirth, 2) to care for a child, spouse, same-sex domestic partner, parent, or parent-in-law with a serious health condition, 3) to care for a newborn, newly adopted, or newly placed foster child, or 4) to care for a child who has an illness or injury that is not a serious health condition, but requires home care. The certification of a physician may be required to document a medical need for a family leave. The faculty member requesting family leave shall comply with the notification requirements established by the College. For more specific details about family leaves, contact the Office of Human Resources.
The family leave request must be discussed with the dean as soon as practicable and, whenever possible, the timing and duration of a family leave and the workload of the individual should be based on a qualifying reason, the requirements of the educational program, the willingness of colleagues to cover the workload, and individual circumstances.
