4.1.4 Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (“Buckley Amendment” or FERPA), Section 1232g of Title 20 United States Code, ties the receipt of federal funds to institutional compliance with laws pertaining to the maintenance and/or release of student records. FERPA training is required of all faculty members at Lewis & Clark College. This training must take place prior to the granting of access to electronic records of students. Faculty should seek advice from the registrar when in doubt about how to handle requests for information about students.
Faculty members should not disclose advising, grading, or other personal information about a student contained in College records without written consent from the student. Without written consent from the student, requests should be referred to the appropriate registrar.
