About Democracy & EducationStatement of Purpose
Democracy & Education is a journal celebrating, enhancing and reflecting upon the teaching and learning of democracy. It is a community colloquium bringing to light the successes and struggles of educators as they work to merge democratic teachings and principles with real-world practices. It is a forum for exploring salient topics, sharing ideas, highlighting research and digging deeper into the practice that binds democratic educators to their students, communities, each other and the world.
This publication is committed to things we all care about: creating and sustaining democratic learning environments, capturing the good practices of the worldwide teaching community, empowering the young to play articulate roles in the public space and supporting diverse perspectives. The journal is published three times each academic year, in the fall, winter and spring.
Edited by Dr. Nancy G. Nagel Editorial Review
Submissions to the journal fall into three categories: Essay, Teacher File, and Reflection (see Submission Guidelines for more information about these categories). Submissions from the Essay and Teacher File categories are peer reviewed in a double-blind review process by external editors who are experts in their fields of study. Submissions to the Reflections category are not sent to external reviewers because they represent authors' subject experiences in the classroom or with other aspects of educational reform.
Submitted manuscripts are evaluated for the overall quality of writing, editorial "fit" with the journal's focus on creating and sustaining democratic classroom communities, and for relevance to the theme of the issue to which they have been submitted.
We are unable to give authors more than a rough estimate of when they will hear back from us regarding editorial decisions. We strive to report to authors within eight weeks of submission, but for many reasons cannot make promises about our turnaround time. Board of Consulting Editors
The following individuals make up our board of consulting editors. In this role, they assist the journal editors in determining pertinent ideas and themes, evaluating contributions, and providing outreach to contributors and subscribers, and inspiring us to keep democracy and social justice centered in each contribution, each issue. If you would like to be considered for election to the board, please contact the editor, Nancy Nagel, at nagel@lclark.edu.
