Submission Guidelines
Democracy & Education would like you to write for upcoming issues. We'd like to hear from you about your successes and challenges, classroom projects and activities, reviews of useful materials, or discussions of issues concerning democratic classroom practice. Please read on to ensure that your paper meets our requirements.
Submit your manuscript to journal@lclark.edu.
Considerations
Articles submitted to the journal will be reviewed by our editors and/or peer reviewers, who may request revision before an article is accepted for publication. (For information on our editorial review policy, please visit the About Democracy & Education page.) Once a submission has been accepted, the copy editor’s changes and queries will be sent to the author, who is expected to respond as quickly as possible.
Submission requirements
Articles should be submitted as attachments via email to journal @ lclark.edu. All correspondence should be addressed to the Editorial Director, Hanna Neuschwander. Full contact information, including the author’s name, affiliated institution, mailing address, email and phone number should be provided on a cover page. Pages should be numbered. Authors are expected to cite sources following the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Manuscripts that do not follow APA guidelines will need to be reformatted prior to publication. All papers are considered with the understanding that they have not been accepted or published elsewhere; we will consider papers presented at a conference, symposium, or workshop as long as the author retains copyright.
Content Types
Submitted manuscripts should fit within one of the following categories. Manuscripts meeting length limits noted below are more likely to be accepted; authors may be asked to revise articles that exceed these limits.
Essay: 10-12 pages, double-spaced (3,000-4,000 words)
Essays are meant to augment understanding of the importance and challenges of the identified theme of the issue (e.g., recent themes have include “Place-based Education” and “A Pedagogy for Social Justice”). Articles should explicitly address the theme, with reference to the journal's larger concern with teaching, learning, and experiencing democracy. Essays should, as much as possible, cover the author’s pedagogical baseline and experiential context.
Teacher File: 6-10 pages, double-spaced (1,500-3,000 words)
Teacher files keep the teaching community abreast of specific practices in schools, classrooms, or programs that are relevant to the theme of the issue. Teacher files should describe innovative classroom practice or include curriculum suggestions whenever possible, including reflection on student responses, and successes and failures. They should include focus on real-world examples of democracy and education in practice.
Reflection: 4-8 pages, double-spaced (1,000-2,000 words)
Reflections provide personal perspective on the distinct triumphs and challenges of a particular experience as it relates to the issue’s theme. Reflections contain subjective descriptions of the author's experiences, but also connect their experiences to the experiences of others and to the world of education around them. They are an outlet for teachers' voices and a way for teachers to speak to one another about the challenges that face them in classrooms around the country and the world.
Note: Reference lists and all ancillary materials should be included in the word-limit guidelines set out above.
Images
Authors are encouraged to submit digital photos or illustrations to accompany their articles. These can be sent as an electronic file in .jpg or .tiff format. Other formats or high-resolution files should be discussed prior to submitting via email. Authors are responsible for securing permission to print images for which they do not hold the copyright, and need to furnish proof of permission upon request. In addition, authors must provide evidence that parental permission to use photos of minors has been secured. Any questions about copyright can be referred to the editorial director.
