Indigenous Ways of Knowing

Volume 17, No. 2

Call for Manuscripts

We are accepting submissions for the upcoming Democracy & Education issue focusing on Indigenous Ways of Knowing. This special issue looks at indigenous learning and knowledge and the relationship to contemporary K-12 educational practices and democratic learning environments in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Some questions for consideration include:

  • What are the foundations of Indigenous learning and knowledge? How are these manifested through education in indigenous communities? (And where does this education take place – in schools, family groups, among peers?)
  • What part does democracy play in indigenous learning environments? How are or how can the foundations of democracy be best included in native classrooms?
  • How should native educators be trained in a way that is sensitive to the priorities of Native American communities, both urban and rural?
  • What are some fundamentals that non-native educators should know in order to be conscientious of native learning environments and native learners?
  • What is authentic about learning and knowledge in indigenous communities? What are consistencies among communities and where are there differences?
  • How may education programs include curriculum and instruction that embraces indigenous students?

Deadline: December 1, 2007
