Hip-Hop and Socio-Cultural Resilience in the U.S. and Sierra Leone
February 8, 2007
Featuring a Sierra Leonean/Black Portland Hip-Hop Cross Cultural/Cross Global film entitled "Moving to the Beat." This documentary reflects the hip-hop activist movement that has swept the globe - specifically revealing the way this music has served as a cultural bridge between youth in Africa and America. Interviews, improvisations, and staged performances by youth in Freetown Sierra Leone and Portland, Oregon give voice to this movement and counteract negative stereotypes of hip-hop as simply glorifying violence and consumer culture. Meet and enter into this conversation with the local youth developers of the film.
