MDID@LC/Images for Teaching at Lewis & Clark

In 2005, Watzek Library implemented MDID (Madison Digital Image Database) which is a web-based digital image management software designed specifically to integrate digital images into the teaching and learning process. It allows faculty to build slideshows from the institution’s digital image collection as well as their own personal image collections. Please contact the Visual Resources Curator for information about MDID tutorials.

  • Please contact the Visual Resources Curator for tutorials or personal instruction on the college's image databases and classroom presentation tools. Call 503-768-7387 or email slide@lclark.edu
  • Classes will be offered on a regular basis through Information Technology's Training Program at http://www.lclark. edu/~training/

2. Building Institutional Image Collections for Teaching.

The Visual Resources Collection creates collections of digital images through the licensing and purchase of digital images and through slide scanning, flatbed scanning and copystand photography. The images are chosen specifically to support the curriculum of the college.

  • The Visual Resource Curator will determine which digital imaging projects fit the criteria of institutional need, staff support and budget.
  • Imaging projects for the Art Department will receive priority due to curriculum needs for visual resources.

3. Personal Digital Image collections

Personal Image Collections are defined as 35mm slides, digital images, or photographs that are owned by faculty, staff or students. The VRC does not scan or prepare in any other way, digital images from or for personal collections. However, some images or image collections might be deemed of a quality and subject matter suitable for the college curriculum. With the patrons permission these images may be accessioned into the college's collection. For assistance with personal image collections there is:

  • Training for scanning digital images in the slide library time permitting.
  • Handouts for suggested scanning standards available upon request.
  • Equipment and assistance for scanning personal images in the Instructional Media Services Resource Lab located on the bottom floor of Watzek library.

4. Subject Expertise in locating images.

Faculty, staff and students may contact the Visual Resources Curator for assistance in locating art and architecture images for classroom teaching or professional research.
