Major: Computer Science and Mathematics
Hometown: Bloomington, IN
"Hey!! My name is Lauren Brown, and I'm from Bloomington, Indiana. I'm a Math and Computer Science major, and I love to sing. I occupy my time with musical activities like choir, voice lessons, and an a cappella group called Momo and the Coop. I'm also a member of LC's new Juggling Club, and I'm hoping to start a Math Club sooner or later.
Portland was a big change after growing up in Indiana, but I'm getting used to the weather, and I love the public transportation. I'm expecting my second year at LC to be just as amazing as the first, so I can't wait to tell you all about it!" Real Life, by Lauren Brown.
Major: Theatre
Hometown: Honolulu, HI
"Hi! My name is Jeremy Lota and I am a sophomore Theatre Major at Lewis & Clark College. I am from Honolulu, Hawai'i on the island of O'ahu. I somehow manage to balance a thousand different activities with all my classes, while still having enough time to hang out with people and make friends with some of the best people in the world. It's a rough job but someone has to do it. I instantly fell in love with Lewis & Clark as soon as I set foot on campus and never looked back." Real Life, by Jeremy Lota.
Major: English
Hometown: Gresham, OR
"Hey, I'm Alyssa. I'm a junior English major and newly-declared Gender Studies minor, but only because L&C doesn't offer Coffee Studies. I'm a to-do list and computer addict, and I'm constantly trying to document my life in photographic, written, and mix CD form. I drink coffee starting at 8 p.m., usually with too much creamer in it, and I keep the blinds closed as much as possible. I've escaped the dorms this year and am now living in an apartment in SE Portland with my boyfriend, our three-legged cat, and my stuffed walrus collection." Real Life, by Alyssa Perkins.
Major: Undecided: Maybe Music, Ethnomusicology, or Sociology
Hometown: Chicago, IL
"Hey, I’m Jonah, a first-year student from a small midwestern town on Lake Michigan: Chicago. As far as majors go, I’m currently undecided, but I’m thinking about music, or sociology, or maybe I’ll design my own major. I’m living in Platt-West this year, in the VAPA hall (Visual and Performing Arts), so I’m surrounded by like-minded art and music geeks. I enjoy, playing guitar, drums, piano, and trombone. I love songwriting, and singing as well. My favorite artists range from the masterfully crafted alternative rock of Wilco and They Might Be Giants, to the ethnic fusion of Ozomatli and Funkadesi, to the ultra-produced hip-hop of The Black Eyed Peas. Besides music, I’m also into web design, which is why I’m doing my work-study as Web Assistant for the rest of this L&C website. I also have a not-so-secret obsession with the original creamy, chocolaty, hazelnut spread: Nutella. I hope you have fun reading as I navigate my first year of college." Real Life, by Jonah Geil-Neufeld.
Major: Environmental Studies, English
Hometown: Wilton, NH
"Hey, I’m Lauren! I’m a returning blogger from last year, a sophomore, and future biology major. I’ve got a strong passion for ecology and, in particular, sustainable agriculture. I’m also considering sociology as a double major. Not that that in any way sums me up. I love trying new things: this year I’m trying fiddle lessons, working a shift at the student run co-op on campus, and TAing a lab for Bio 100 in addition to taking a full schedule of
my own classes and singing in the Cappella Nova choir. Things that remain constant from last year are my intense love of tea, knitting whenever I get the chance, and my quest to cook delicious vegan food of all sorts. I expect that my blog this year will answer some of the following questions: Have the vegan options improved in the Bon? What’s it like living in Odell? Will my organic
chemistry class really be as deathly as the rumors insist? (I don’t really want to know, actually). And will I finish the vest that I’ve begun knitting this semester in an epic bout of knitting? My blog shall tell all..." Real Life, by Lauren Morse.
Major: History, Spanish
Hometown: Forest Grove, OR
"My name is Zeb Larson and I'm a sophomore. I'm from Forest Grove, Oregon, which is about thirty miles outside of Portland. I went to high school in Portland at Sunset High School and graduated from the IB Program with the IB Diploma. I transferred here at the beginning of this year. In 2006, I attended the University of Oregon but left after a month because I suffered a brain hemorrhage that forced me to leave school. I spent the fall recuperating and enrolled at Portland State for the remainder of the academic year while I reapplied to schools. My research led me to Lewis & Clark, and after interviewing and touring the campus I fell in love with the school.
This year I'm taking Colonial Latin American History 141, Spanish 201, Exploration and Discovery and Math 055. I do a radio show once a week that consists primarily of jazz, work for the Admissions Department, write with the literary review and generally try to stay involved on campus.
I've always been a big reader and can spend hours simply reading a book. My favorite authors are Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Walt Whitman, Pablo Neruda, John Steinbeck, Graham Greene and Raymond Chandler. My tastes tend to be fairly eclectic as well. I spent one summer reading The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and recently I've enjoyed Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammet. I like to think of myself as a jazz aficionado and a movie buff as well." Real Life, by Zeb Larson.
Major: Psychology and Biology (hopefully..)
Hometown: Burlingame, CA
"Hello! My name is Sarah Raskoff and I am a freshman from Burlingame, California. Right now, I am majoring in Psychology with Pre-Medicine in mind. I attended a tiny college-prep high school and wanted to attend Lewis & Clark from the moment I stepped on campus! I am looking forward to a great first year here at L&C in Portland!" Real Life, by Sarah Raskoff.
Major: Undecided
Hometown: Ann Arbor, MI
"Hi, everyone! My name is Tessa and I'm a first-year student at L&C from Ann Arbor, MI. I live in Odell Hall which is right across from our student center. I love the outdoors, books, movies, laughing, being with friends and family, eating, singing (badly), sports, stepping on crunchy leaves and a lot more! I have a lot of academic interests but I am almost completely sure that my major will be Biology or some other natural science. I also enjoy languages, European history and math. I hope that my blog will give you some insight into what life is like on Palatine Hill as well as be fun and interesting to read. Welcome to the Real Life page!" Real Life, by Tessa Marzulla.
Major: International Affairs
Hometown: Cypress, CA
"Hi ya’ll! I’m Elizabeth. I’m a sophomore, International Affairs/ English/ Undecided major, originally from Cypress, California. Before ya’ll go wondering where that is, let me spare you the brain power, it’s in Orange County. Yes, 'The O.C.' Don’t judge me. I am not your typical So-cal girl. I am fascinated by people I don't know, and I break into whisper randomly. I dance even when people are watching. Sometimes, I fall into this state of vertigo. Basically, I’m weird, but that's interesting, right? Moving on, I am very excited to show you my life here at L&C. It should be pretty happening. This year, I’m a member of the ISLC, Speech & Debate, AGAPE, French Club, ASU, and SMART. I also leave plenty of time to go downtown. Portland is such an amazing place, and most of my freshman year was spent downtown sipping mochas or a chai at some cozy coffeehouse. Everything about Portland and the L&C campus, from the trees to the people, inspires me, and I hope it will inspire you too." Real Life, by Elizabeth Chang.
Major: Sociology/Anthropology
Hometown: Porterville, CA
"My name is Rocio Ayala, but people know me as Rosie. I am currently a senior Sociology/Anthropology major and Ethnic Studies minor—this was not planned. I started off as a Psychology major and wanting to do either a History or Political Science minor, but then I took Computer Science and loved it…so I switched my minor to Comp Sci. However, that backfired on me when I realized I didn’t want to do psychology anymore because of the biological component, but my problem was that I really liked the study, so that is how I fell into Sociology/Anthropology, or SoAn as we know it here, it has the social aspects of psychology with cultural relevance. Both my parents are from Mexico and moved to a small town in central California by the name of Porterville; it lies in the middle of Bakersfield and Fresno in the mid 80’s. They have lived in the same town for about the last 22 years, which means that up until I came up to Portland that is where I spent all of my time. Now, seeing as graduation is in May, I plan to stay in Portland and explore a little, see what I have to offer the people of this city, or what the city has to offer me—who knows." Real Life, by Rosie Ayala.
