Spend a week working the Forest Service working in a remote Oregon Wilderness Area! On this new service project, we’ll backpack into one of the Wilderness Areas in the Oregon Cascades. We’ll assist the US Forest Service by using GPS devices to inventory the impact of recreational users on fragile alpine vegetation. In addition, we may do some campsite revegetation work. If you enjoy backpacking and want to help give back to wilderness, this trip is for you!

Join us for this opportunity to collect some of the first scientific data on how the forest changes as a result of invasive species removal. We’ll be teaming up with a Lewis & Clark researcher and working on a section of forest adjacent to the Lewis & Clark College campus that is now called the River View Natural Area. Our group will hike the trails (and perhaps do some work off trail) in this large piece of property or at a control site nearby, collecting vegetation data, measuring study plots, and setting up transects. The project will involve learning to identify many Pacific Northwest tree and plant species. We’ll also have the opportunity to spend two days hiking at the Oregon Coast & at the Columbia River Gorge. If you have a love of the environment and want to learn more about how a scientific field study happens, this is the trip for you!
