On July 1, 2022, Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permanently adopted MANDATORY ANNUAL training for all employees who may be exposed to unhealthy or hazardous air quality during periods of wildfire smoke. The presidential search committee has been appointed, with Trustees Paula Hayes BS ’92 and Pat Mahaffy BA ’85 as co-chairs. The other 13 members of the committee include additional trustees, faculty, and staff, as well as a student representative.
We are in the process of updating all of our COVID-related policies regarding events, travel, face coverings, testing, etc., and will share those policies, as well as an updated COVID webpage, in mid-July. In the meantime, the current requirement that unvaccinated persons wear face coverings when inside campus buildings remains in place.
Working in moderate to extreme heat, especially outdoors, can pose significant risks to worker health based on age, fitness, type of work, personal tolerance, and other factors. OSHA provides guidelines for risk levels based on the NWS heat index chart, a measure of perceived heat that combines temperature and humidity.

The addresses of most Lewis & Clark properties changed in 2020. Beginning May 2021, the U.S. Postal Service will no longer honor our old Southwest Portland addresses.
It seems that the problem is with a wired Ethernet connection. If you use wireless there should be no problem. However, we still recommend using a wired connection when possible to improve overall stability. Zoom released an update to fix the problem on March 7th. Go here to update to Zoom 5.5.5.
I hope you got some well-earned rest and down time during the first mini-break last week. Reports I’ve received from students and staff indicate that events and activities were well-attended, College Outdoors’ mini-trips were successes, and the late winter sunshine was much appreciated.
Instead of the traditional Spring Break week normally observed during Spring Semester, this year CAS students will be given two mini-breaks. The first is this week, February 25-26. (The second mini-break is March 22-23.) To keep our COVID rates low and our community safe and healthy, it is critically important that every student help maintain the campus bubble and not travel or engage in non-essential activities. Student Life professionals and student group leaders have put together programming and activities to make the most of your mini-break “staycations.”

A national leader in test-optional admissions, Lewis & Clark has updated its long-standing policy. Starting with the fall 2021 incoming class, applicants who prefer not to submit standardized test scores will no longer be required to submit a portfolio of academic work in their place.

In an effort to improve 9-1-1 dispatcher emergency response time, the Portland City Council will divide Southwest Portland in two on May 1, creating a sixth sextant called South Portland. Area street addresses will change as a result.
In February 2018, Lewis & Clark’s trustees voted unanimously to divest from fossil fuel holdings in the endowment. Following the first year of our divestment process, we reduced the exposure to publicly traded fossil fuel companies by over 50 percent. Read the full progress report to learn more.

Portland United Against Hate, a series of 15 workshops offered between February and June 2018, is free and open to the public. These workshops will provide attendees with the information, skills and resources necessary to support their actions in resistance to hate and bias.
The fourth annual student-run symposium, History and Movement: Transition in the Middle East, explores the development of modern and historical discourse through the lens of transition. Students will discuss gender, religion, politics, and the implications of continuity and change in the region over time. The symposium kicks off on Monday, February 19.

Barry Glassner and more than 100 other college and university presidents have signed an open letter to President-elect Trump urging him to “condemn and work to prevent the harassment, hate, and acts of violence that are being perpetrated across our nation.” President Glassner was among the small group who worked together to draft the letter.

These changes will impact voicemail messages delivered both to your voicemail inbox, as well as your LC email inbox. All messages older than 90 days will be permanently deleted from your LC email inbox and voicemail inbox onApril 1, 2024. Starting July 1, 2018, you’ll see a new item on your pay stub for Oregon’s statewide transit tax. The tax is one-tenth of one percent (.001)—or $1 per $1,000.
Currently associate vice president for alumni, parent, and student engagement, Andrew McPheeters will serve as interim vice president beginning August 1 until a replacement for Anna Gonzalez, who will join Harvey Mudd College, begins. Andrew will not seek the permanent position.

Last year members of Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS)—of which Lewis & Clark is a part—were invited to administer a sexual assault climate survey. Lewis & Clark accepted the invitation, along with 56 other schools. Of the 57 institutions surveyed, 54 were small schools with undergraduate enrollments less than 3,500. All are private institutions.

Professor Emeritus John A. Crampton died on Saturday, November 30, at Terwilliger Plaza here in Portland. A member of the Political Science Department from 1959 until his retirement in 1988, Jack Crampton was a memorable teacher who influenced generations of Lewis & Clark students.
