We are in the process of updating all of our COVID-related policies regarding events, travel, face coverings, testing, etc., and will share those policies, as well as an updated COVID webpage, in mid-July. In the meantime, the current requirement that unvaccinated persons wear face coverings when inside campus buildings remains in place.
Working in moderate to extreme heat, especially outdoors, can pose significant risks to worker health based on age, fitness, type of work, personal tolerance, and other factors. OSHA provides guidelines for risk levels based on the NWS heat index chart, a measure of perceived heat that combines temperature and humidity.
After 43 years at Lewis & Clark, Administrative Assistant for the Theatre Department Joyce Beeny will retire on June 15, 2021.
“Throughout her time at Lewis & Clark, she has been the soul, the brain, and the ‘commander in chief’ of the department” Professor of Theatre and Department Chair Stepan Simek said. “Her humanity, her love for everyone that she distributed freely and widely, and her palpable joy of being at her desk every single day have made her into a true icon not only for the Theatre department, but for the College as a whole. We are happy to report that we are planning for fully in-person instruction in Portland this fall. We expect to deliver a Lewis & Clark undergraduate education as we did pre-COVID, with all courses taking place on campus and without the option of remote access.
Gifts made by alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of LC raised more than $265,000 in support of all three campuses. Our anonymous donors were so inspired by the outpouring of love and support shown for LC in this difficult time. Both the David Savage Award and the Lorry Lokey Awards prioritize and celebrate inspirational leadership, rigorous scholarship, and creative accomplishments in the classroom and in the broader academic community. This year’s awards recognize four Lewis & Clark faculty members from the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities for their excellence.
The law school welcomesEthan Snyder JD ’20 to serve as the law school’s director of Academic Resources and Diversity. Snyder is a first-generation college student who graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Law and Legal Studies, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy. Snyder replaces J.B. Kim JD ’94 who left the law school in late 2020 to become the director of Diversity and Inclusion at the Oregon State Bar.
Pamela Hart became the new Assistant Dean of the Animal Law Program at Lewis & Clark Law School on January 1, and will continue to serve as Executive Director for the Center for Animal Law Studies.

For almost 60 years, Lewis & Clark’s International Affairs Symposium has been nationally recognized as a hub for discussing the most pressing matters in foreign affairs. From April 5 to April 7, the symposium will focus on controversy and emphasize opposing viewpoints on environmental degradation, the conflicts of multiculturalism, and the structure of the future international system.
The addresses of most Lewis & Clark properties changed in 2020. Beginning May 2021, the U.S. Postal Service will no longer honor our old Southwest Portland addresses.
The symposium will focus on questions of absence and lack, exploring the theoretical, political, and interpersonal dimensions of these questions in terms of gender and sexuality. Steven “Sky” Greig has been named interim director of Campus Safety. Greig was named in the position after the retirement of John Harvey in December 2020.
