Lewis & Clark
College is committed to serving the needs of its deaf and hard-of-hearing
students. Lewis & Clark College's well-known graduate program
in Special Education for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing has traditionally
attracted the majority of students with hearing difficulties, but
the Law School and undergraduate program have also served students
who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
In classes students have utilized
sign language interpreters and notetakers or, on occasion, real-time
captioning. Hard-of-hearing students also have utilized a portable
FM system with the back-up of a notetaker.
Instructors are encouraged to
be sensitive to the needs of students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing,
and the Coordinator of Student Support Services can provide advice,
support and accommodations for students and faculty who request assistance
in meeting the needs of the student and the requirements of a particular
course. We have provided the services listed below for students who
are deaf or hard-of-hearing, but each case and each request for accommodations
is considered individually. As in the case of all students with disabilities,
students should be strong self-advocates and notify the office of
Student Support Services in advance of their needs, especially if
they use interpreters or real-time captioners, who need to be contacted
in a timely manner.
Students are encouraged to let
the Student Support Services Office (at 503-768-7191 or access@lclark.edu)
know as soon as possible if they are planning to visit or attend Lewis
& Clark so that arrangements can be made to meet their needs.
