Lewis & Clark College has
provided accommodations, over the years, for students with epilepsy,
with autoimmune illnesses, multiple sclerosis, psychological
disabilities, and a variety of other conditions. We look closely
at the documentation the student provides, discuss at length
the student's needs, and attempt to arrive at agreement on the
accommodations that will be most effective in allowing the student
to perform successfully at the College.
Two factors that are especially
important in this effort are (1) the thoroughness and professional
expertise of the student's documentation of the disability and
(2) the student's willingness to take responsibility for advocating
for him/herself with the Student Support Services staff and
with instructors.
Once the Coordinator of
Student Support Students and the disabled student have gone
over the documentation and agreed upon accommodations, a letter
is drafted that will be sent to instructors each semester at
the request of the student which explains the effects of the
disability and lists appropriate accommodations. If the instructor
has reservations about providing any of the suggested accommodations,
he/she is advised to contact the Coordinator of Student Support
Services to discuss the issue. The Coordinator's role is not
only to advocate for students but also to negotiate for accommodations
that are regarded as equitable by both disabled students and
faculty.
Students are encouraged
to contact the Student Support Services Office (503-768-7191
or access@lclark.edu)
if they are planning to visit or attend Lewis & Clark in order
to discuss possible accommodations in advance. |
