Friendship Family Program

The Friendship Family program at Lewis & Clark matches new students with Americans for fun, friendship, and wider cultural understanding.  You will learn more about American culture.  You can also share information and gain new perspectives on your own culture.  You'll experience how families live in the USA.  You'll have a chance to get off campus now and then, and to meet people of other age groups.

What can you and the family do together?
Anything you both enjoy!  They might invite you to

• go for a hike;
• see a video or go out to a movie;
• join them in a volunteer activity;
• make popcorn or brownies at home;
• watch a child's sports event or school play;
• have dinner at home or a picnic in the park;
• take a short day trip to the beach or the mountains;
• hang out and chat about interests you have in common;
• or anything else they happen to be doing.

The Friendship Family program is:

• not a homestay--you will live on campus in your residence hall.
• not very time-consuming--you and your family will get together when you both have free time--usually once a month, maybe more often.
• not required--you do not have take part in the program, especially if you plan to spend free time with friends or relatives in the Portland area.  But if you want to find out how Americans really live (not as they are shown on TV or in the movies), this is an easy way!

How do you sign up for the Friendship Family Program?

You'll fill out a form to tell us about yourself and what you like to do.  You will be introduced to someone with similar interests during the first few weeks of the semester.  After that, it's up to you and the family!
