Technology: Good or Evil?

The Ethics of Technology
Academic English Studiies
Lewis & Clark College
Fall 2005--Mod II

Welcome to this class! I hope you have fun.

You can use this site to check your daily assignments, download articles and questions, and generally follow the calendar. Every day, after class, I will add to the calendar for the next class. CHECK THE CALENDAR EVERY DAY! Sometimes you will need to download an exercise. Please don't print out the calendar now, because there will be frequent changes.

CALENDAR

INTRODUCTION: In this class we will read about some of the advances in medical technology and discuss the ethics of these advances. We will listen to interviews about these topics. Technology is doing wonderful things; however, educated people must question the unlimited application of this technology. Is every new discovery or invention good, just because it's new? Is it correct? Is it ethical? We will discuss these readings, and each student will take a position in writing or speaking.

EXPECTATIONS: How can you learn English in this class?

  • Come to class every day, on time.
  • Do all the work, on time.
  • Read every assignment.
  • Prepare for discussions.
  • Think! Wonder! Question!

It is the teacher's job to offer you interesting topics to read and think about in English. It is the student's job to actively take advantage of these opportunities.
