The Caribbean Islands are divided in two groups, "Greater Antilles" and "Lesser Antilles". The Dominican Republic shares with Haiti the Island of Hispaniola, one of the largest of the archipelago.

Hispaniola, the second island in size, is located between Cuba and Puerto Rico. The Dominican Republic is situated on the Eastern side of the island and Haiti to the Western. Santo Domingo, its Capital, is the largest and most important city. Other well known cities and towns are Santiago de los Caballeros, Cabarete, Sosúa., La Romana, Puerto Plata, Higüey, etc.
