- To introduce the indirect object

Se lo da a Jorge. He gives it to George.

- To indicate direction towards something or some place, after a verb of movement (ir, venir, bajar, subir, dirigirse, acercarse,...)

Ellos van a Lewis & Clark. They go to LC.

Suben al avión. They get on the plane.

- To indicate the time at which something happens

Yo me levanto a las ocho. I get up at eight.

- To indicate the period of time after which something hapened

Se divorciaron a los dos años. They divorced after two years.

- To indicate the distance at which something is

Mi coche está a una cuadra. My car is one block away.

- Al + Infinitive: To indicate simultaneous actions

Al entrar lo vi. When I went in, I saw it.

- To introduce a human or personified direct object

Yo veo a Juan. I see Juan.

Yo veo a mi perro. I see my dog.

- With definite pronouns alguien, nadie, alguno, ninguno, cualquiera, when referring to humans

No veo a nadie. I do not see anyone.

- After tener

Tengo * una hermana. I have a sister.

- With indefinite direct objects

La empresa busca * secretarias. The company is looking for secretaries.

Examples

- To indicate where something takes place or is located

Estamos en el edificio Miller. We are in the Miller Building.

Estudio en LC. I study at LC.

- Signifying "in, inside"

El cuaderno está en mi mochila. The notebook is in my backpack.

- Signifying "on, on top of"

Tu libro está en mi escritorio. Your book is on my ddesk.

- With time expressions - months, years, and other expressions of time (but days of the week: Yo estudio inglés los lunes. I study English on Mondays)

Yo voy a Argentina en diciembre. I’m going to Argentina in December.

Mi profesor no quiere hablar del examen en este momento. My professor does not want to talk about the test at this moment.

- With ordinal numbers followed by the infinitive

Los estudiantes son los primeros en salir. The students are the first to leave.
