Mobile Genetic Elements

Oct 16, 2000

Announcements:

Learning objectives for Monday 10/16/00:

Students should be able to…

1. Compare and constrast the following pairs of terms:

  • IS elements and bacterial transposons
  • Transposons and retrotransposons
  • Viral and nonviral retrotransposons
  • LINES and SINES

2. Describe evidence that would suggest that a given repetitive element is a transposon.

3. Describe how you could provide experimental evidence that a given mobile genetic element is a retrotransposon as opposed to a transposon.

4. Explain potential evolutionary advantages of having interspersed repetitive elements scattered throughout a genome. Include a discussion of gene duplication, exon shuffling, and rearrangement of enhancer sequences.
