What computing facilities are available on campus?
There are nearly 100 computers in the public computer labs. In addition, many departments have discipline-specific labs for teaching and student projects. Each residence hall room includes Internet access for each resident, as do most study areas in Watzek Library.

Do I need a personal computer?
Computers are not a mandatory purchase for Lewis and Clark College students, though you will be required to use a computer to complete some class assignments. There are nearly 100 public computers available on campus; however, many students appreciate the convenience of having a personal computer, as well as the ability to customize their computer for their own needs.

How do I access the Internet at Lewis & Clark?
Access to the Internet and related services (mail, web, ftp, news, etc.) is available in all residence hall rooms and library study areas, as well as the public computing labs. Information Technology provides a PIO-NET “Get Connected” CD-ROM tutorial and software installer that will take you through the process of connecting to the network step-by-step.

For more information, call Information Technology (503-768-7020) or visit the PIO-NET web site.

What about wireless?
As of this time, WiFi Internet access is available primarily in the academic areas of campus. Maggie's Café is the only current WiFi location in the Residence Halls. There are plans to expand the WiFi network this summer. Visit IT on the web for the latest information We recommend Apple's Airport products for the Mac, Intel's built-in wireless adapters or the Proxim/Orinoco line of PCMCIA wireless products for Windows.

Will I need my own printer?
Laser printers are available in the public computing labs. Each student is allowed 250 free shets of laser printing per semester. After that, each sheet costs five cents. Many students, however, prefer the convenience of having their own printer. Since space is limited in the residence halls, we recommend a low-cost inkjet printer. The Computer Showroom offers a variety of inexpensive color inkjet printers and cartridges, and will help you select the printer that is right for you.
